Hispanic support boosts Clinton to win in Nevada

“Hillary Rodham Clinton rode a wave of Hispanic support to defeat Barack Obama in a bitter and divisive Nevada caucus yesterday - even as she attacked the state’s voting procedures as undemocratic.

Clinton defeated Obama 51 percent to 45 percent, with John Edwards finishing a distant third with 4 percent. Because of the proportional manner in which Nevada awards delegates, it wasn’t clear whether Clinton had won a majority of them.”*

Jorge ‘El Travieso’ Arce to Host Azteca America’s Knockout Boxing Show Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser Premieres Sunday, January 20TH at 8 PM/7 C

“Azteca América announced today the premiere of Retador Azteca (Azteca Challenger) Presented by Budweiser, on Sunday, January 20th at 8 PM/7 C. The new boxing reality show pits eight Mexican contenders against eight Americans in a duel of honor leading up to the final bout at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser will air nationally Sundays at 8 PM/7 C and will be hosted by native Mexican and two-time WBC Super Flyweight Champion, Jorge “El Travieso” Arce, one of the most recognized names in boxing.

The producers of Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser searched near and far for the best undiscovered boxing talent in Mexico City and across the U.S., including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami and San Juan (Puerto Rico). Separated from their families for eighteen weeks, the boxers live in “reality houses,” with the Mexican team in Puebla and the Americans in Las Vegas. The show takes an inside look at each contender’s personal story and what motivates him to fight for victory– overcoming a life of poverty, a promise to a deceased parent, a better education for his children.

The unique twist in this series is fun, yet intense, rivalry between the Mexican and U.S. boxers as they compete simultaneously in each country. For die-hard fight fans this equals action times two — double the suspense, the punches, the sweat and the tears. In the final bout airing Sunday, May 18, 2008, the finalist from each country will face-off, glove-to-glove at the world-famous Caesars Palace to battle for the grand prize of $50,000 and a leg-up in the fiercely competitive boxing industry. The second place will win a prize of $10,000.

“We are delighted to debut Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser, a show that will offer our viewers all the excitement and passion that Latinos feel for boxing,” said Harry Abraham, Vice President of Programming and Production for Azteca América. “Our network is delivering top-of-the-line programming conceptualized and made by U.S. Latino producers specifically for U.S. Spanish-language media audiences.”

Boxers will be pushed beyond their physical limits by Jorge “El Travieso” Arce and his team of trainers, while counselors will work to keep them mentally and psychologically focused. At the end of each episode, viewers will be able to vote for their favorite “Retador” online or via text message. A true test of speed, endurance and mental fortitude, Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser, is sure to keep viewers ringside.

Retador Azteca Presented by Budweiser is a co-production of Azteca América and Mapitv Entertainment Group. Mapi Montero is the owner of Mapitv Entertainment Group and the creator, executive producer and director of the show. A native of Chile, she has the distinction of being the only woman in the U.S. who is a licensed boxing promoter.

La Bloga: SPOTLIGHT ON AZTLAN BOOKS Y MAS - Las Vegas

“Aztlan Books Y Mas is the brain child of Marilu and Tony Rodriguez. This is a family run business centered on both the educational and real world experiences of the Latin American culture they have encountered. Being a mix of Cuban/Mexican, Marilu graduated from Cal State Northridge with a degree in Chicano Studies. It is here that her mind was exposed to many of the great authors and products they offer. She went on to the University of New Mexico where she earned her Master’s in Elementary Education. She has been in the classroom for over ten years and is currently teaching Spanish to kindergartners in Henderson, Nevada. It was here that her on-going search for authentic, culturally relevant literature for her students began and was not satiated with what the mainstream bookstores in Southern Nevada had to offer.”*

Taking a Gamble on the Latino Vote: The Nevada Caucus, Part I

“Saturday, January 19, will be a historic day. For the first time in American history, Latinos will have a major voice in picking the presidential nominees. For the first time, the state of Nevada, with a large Latino population, will hold an early and therefore influential caucus.

I’ll be travelling to the state to provide some first-hand accounts of the efforts there to reach out to the Latino community and get them to participate by the Democratic Party, the unions, and outside organizations. And I’ll be attending a caucus where there is expected to be high Latino turnout to see how successful those efforts are. But first some background to set the stage.

Nevada has had caucuses since the 1960s, but they have always come late, and have been low-turnout affairs. Less than 1 percent of eligible voters participated in the 2004 caucus. Perhaps this low level of participation is simply part of Nevada’s character—even in the general election in 2004, Nevada ranked forty-second in voter turnout.”*

The new 30-second spot, titled “La voz de los que no tienen Voz” (The voice of the voiceless) highlights Hillary’s record as an agent of change for the Latino community - fighting for healthcare, new jobs, and to put an end anti-Hispanic demagoguery.

Watch the ad here

Following is the translation of the script for the ad.

“La Voz de los que no tienen Voz”
TV: 30

[Announcer] “We, the Latinos of Nevada, want to have a better life for our families.

“This is the moment when our vote needs to be our voice.”

“We need to support our friend Hillary Clinton. She is in favor of universal health insurance and economic policies that will create millions of new jobs. And Hillary has said ‘Enough is enough’ to the anti-Hispanic demagoguery. She has worked in favor of the interests of our community for decades and she always delivers.

“Hillary is the voice of those without a voice.

“Next Saturday, at 11 in the morning, let’s go out and vote for Hillary, so that we can have a better life.

Bursting at seams, consulate seeks a bigger, friendlier home - Mexican official complains of prejudice by building’s owner - Las Vegas

“Mariano Lemus Gas, Mexico’s consul in Las Vegas, made a plea to the valley’s Hispanic community in a recent edition of El Mundo, a local Spanish-language weekly.

Six years after becoming the valley’s first consulate, his downtown office needs a new home. He hopes the community can help.

The decision is mostly a result of the continuous growth in the area’s Mexican community. Demand at the office has gone from about 100 documents daily to nearly 180 during the past three years alone, while the consulate’s staff has gone from 10 to 16 since opening day, said Johannes Jacome, alternate consul.”*

CONGRESSWOMAN SOLIS & DOLORES HUERTA HELP KICK-OFF “JUNTOS CON HILLARY, UNA VIDA MEJOR” TOUR OF NEVADA Latina Leaders Hit the Campaign Trail for Hillary

Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) and Dolores Huerta, Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers, joined Senator Hillary Clinton in Las Vegas yesterday to kick-off the “Juntos Con Hillary, Una Vida Mejor” (Together with Hillary, A Better Life) tour of Nevada.  Solis and Huerta will continue their outreach efforts to Latino voters in Nevada today, particularly Latinas.

“I’m proud to join Dolores in campaigning for Senator Clinton.  Our community needs Hillary because she has the strength and experience to deliver change on day one in the Oval Office,” said Solis.  “She has always stood for America’s children and families and her record on the issues that matter most to the Latino community – education, health care, and the economy – is unmatched by any other candidate.”

After the kick-off event at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 88 training center, Solis and Huerta walked precincts together and encouraged Latino voters to caucus for Clinton on January 19th.  Today they will meet with precinct captains, attend local church services, and visit with Latino business owners.  One of four residents in Nevada is of Hispanic or Latino descent.

Huerta led the kick-off crowd in chanting “Si se puede” (Yes, we can), the famous phrase she and Cesar Chavez coined.  “Throughout her life Hillary has been a strong leader, working for issues that make a difference in every family’s life,” said Huerta. “She is the best qualified candidate and the one that’s ready to put our country back on track.  The tremendous response she has received in Los Angeles and Nevada is a testament to the large support she has in the Latino community.”

Solis and Huerta have stumped extensively for Clinton in California, Nevada and elsewhere around the country.  Solis, the first Latina appointed to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the first woman to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, serves as Co-Chair of the campaign’s Environmental and Energy Task Force and Co-Chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Council.  Huerta, a renowned human rights activist, is Co-Chair of the campaign’s Hispanic Outreach.

Power of Culinary Union hangs in balance as its protege Kihuen tries to break Obama hold - Las Vegas

Filed under [ Hispanic News ] [ Politics ] [ Top Stories ] [ Election 2008 ] [ Nevada ] [ Las Vegas ]

“The media surged forward, surrounding Sen. Hillary Clinton and Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen, as they walked along 22nd Street in eastern Las Vegas in a neighborhood dominated by Hispanics and heavily populated with Culinary Union workers.

An intense look on his face, an emphatic tone in his voice, Kihuen sought to reassure the presidential hopeful the union that had created him as a politician was not a potent, monolithic force that could destroy her chances here.

“I cannot emphasize to you enough, Senator, how the Hispanic workers in the Culinary are loyal to you,” Kihuen whispered. “They are loyal to the Culinary, but they will vote for you.””*

Clinton campaigns among Hispanics in Nevada

“With its piñatas and painted guitars on the walls, the Lindo Michoacan Restaurant might seem an unusual venue for a presidential candidate to promise to end the U.S. housing foreclosure crisis.

But in stopping at the ornate Mexican restaurant last night, Democratic hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton deftly hit two key Nevada issues at once.

Outsiders may associate the Silver State with gambling, but the two biggest trends here are the home foreclosure rate, the highest in the country, and a booming Hispanic population, which could play a pivotal role in both Nevada’s Jan. 19 caucuses and in the general election. “*

Latina’s past family struggles help inspire other Latino families

“Sometimes, a common experience can form a bond that lasts forever.

And it is this hope that inspires Cassandra Luera in her role as a family advocate for the United Advocates for Children and Families (UACF) organization.

In this job, Luera, 40, helps families to understand and seek the services they need for their children, whether it’s counseling, assistance with juvenile justice issues or help with the foster care system. Luera knows how difficult it can be to ask for - and sometimes receive - help because her own family has needed special services over the years.”*
