Abuse among immigrants more difficult to confront; victims especially afraid to get help

““It’s a devastating problem for every victim,” said Mira Kramarovsky, a family-violence specialist for the Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland. “But when you don’t know the language, and you’re afraid of everything — even your partner — it’s even worse.”

Kramarovsky spoke those words to a dozen women gathered in a conference room at the Cleveland YWCA. The group reflected a rainbow of cultures — Russian, Chinese, Arab, Latina and South Asian.

Her topic, “Domestic Violence in Immigrant Homes,” had wrested the attention of each in recent times, often after a spectacular incident. “*

Amnesty International: Venezuela neglecting battered women

President Hugo Chavez’s government passed new domestic violence legislation in March 2007 requiring that, among other things, Venezuela’s 23 states and more than 300 municipalities construct women’s shelters.”*

University of Colorado - Boulder’s chief legal counsel nominated by Bush for federal judgeship - Christine Arguello

“A path that began in a tiny Colorado town and continued through Boulder, Harvard and some of the state’s highest legal positions may soon lead to a federal judgeship for Christine Arguello.

Arguello, chief legal counsel for the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus, was nominated Thursday by President George Bush to fill one of three judicial vacancies in the U.S. District Court in Denver. Arguello’s name was submitted to the White House by both of Colorado’s U.S. senators — Ken Salazar, a Democrat, and Wayne Allard, a Republican — and the Senate Judiciary Committee will now review and decide on the nomination.”*

“María Guadalupe isn’t alone. In a sign that powerful drug cartels are extending their reach further into Mexican society, an increasing number of women are becoming involved in Mexico’s drug trade, even as violence grows, authorities say.
