"What started as an altercation between a teacher and student at Minico High School Monday sparked a full-blown national controversy on Wednesday.

About 50 Minico High students responded to a radio commentator's call to action and wore Mexican paraphernalia in a silent show of support for Froylan Camelo.

The 16-year-old Latino student has accused a teacher of disrespecting a Mexican flag he brought to school Monday to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and of making racist comments on other occasions."

Clint Straatman denies Froylan Camelo's version of events but said he took the flag Monday because "white kids" might have hurt the 16-year-old. He said he put it in a garbage can because he had no place else to keep it.
Camelo said he was changing into gym clothes at Minico High School in Rupert when Straatman told him, "Give me the flag.""

"Idaho State University-Boise professor Galen Louis has received a $240,000 grant from the American Legacy Foundation to help create an anti-smoking campaign targeting Hispanic teenagers in Canyon County. But there’s a twist.

Louis’ research associates won’t be public health experts. They’ll be teenagers from the Nampa-Caldwell area, who’ll decide the most effective way to get their message out.

That makes perfect sense to Louis, who holds a Ph.D. in community health and directs ISU-Boise’s Master of Public Health program. “We’re working from the premise that the community we are trying to reach – Hispanic teenagers — will have the best answers.”"

"Historically, Hispanics, including those here in the Gem State, are less likely to register and vote in any election.

Theres now a campaign aimed at getting more Latinos to the polls. As the states Hispanic population continues to grow faster than any other minority group, voter turnout among Latinos still remains extremely low.

But one group is now reaching out to Hispanics and other minorities, convincing them they can make a difference. They can march, protest and voice their opinion on the streets about issues important to the Hispanic community."

"A little over a year ago, the Boise Weekly made history in our community by publishing an excellent report on immigration in both English and Spanish. Soon after, they unveiled the generous initiative of offering a blog in Spanish, whose growth exceeded initial expectations, as shown by the number of registered visits. Even so, the final objective of making these articles appear in Spanish in the printed edition never made it to light due to a lack of space. Now, The Arbiter has extended the opportunity to give life to this project in its daring and independent pages.

This opportunity is especially unique given what is being expressed in certain social and political circles in this country. And the truth is that such neoliberal times split the soul of anyone paying attention to the fleecing that continues to take place here. The elimination of civil liberties, the undoing of social programs, and the deterioration of free speech have become manifest (I have here "The Age of Untruth") and as a result, this new journalistic space can be one of those tiny windows where we stick our heads out, breath and feed the hope of the return of a few basic liberties."

Idaho's Hispanic population is expected to be 51 percent greater this year than just eight years ago.

"The beauty and character of a culture cannot be understood simply by studying dates and historic events. It can only be captured through art. That's where it lives and breathes, and where its influences can be followed for as long as that art survives.

That's the experience of "Las Artes de Mexico," an exhibit at the Boise Art Museum of Mexican art that spans 3,500 years of Latin culture, from the ancient Olmec civilization to contemporary artists such as Diego Rivera and Miguel Covarrubias."

"As we begin 2008, it was another record year of growth for the State of Idaho. The Gem State is now the fourth fastest-growing state in the nation, and part of that growth can be attributed to the increase in our Hispanic population..

There are some counties in Idaho in which 20% or more of the population is made up of Hispanics. Here in Eastern Idaho, the Hispanic population is continually growing, and many in our community want to teach them the skills to adapt to society."
