Snippet: The good news is, Obama’s standing in the Latino community is quite strong. The better news is, Obama is even stronger than expected. The remarkable news is, Obama is even ahead in Florida, where Cuban-American voters have consistently voted Republican for the last four decades.

Snippet: A Georgia study also found that Hispanics are twice as likely as whites not to have a government-issued photo ID. Hispanic citizens born outside of the United States often face significant barriers to obtaining ID consistent with the challenges facing foreign-born citizens generally. And of course, there are the 12 million undocumented immigrants who live among us. While some states in the past had granted licenses to anyone who provided proof of residency, that is already changing as the REAL ID regulations take effect.

Snippet: In another striking finding, the report said that 99 percent of people referred to federal prosecutors for immigration offenses in March were charged. “Any immigration case that comes through the door is going to be prosecuted,” Mr. Burnham said. “That’s astonishing.”

Snippet: The news about Latino Catholics is not good for the GOP. Only 15 percent call themselves Republican, compared to 57 percent for the Democrats. The number of independents among these voters is growing (28 percent).

Snippet – What happened to Forbes plans of launching a Spanish-language edition? – 18 months after the announcement the new product has not yet been published.

Snippet – Key players brought in by Omar Minaya have been expensive busts: Pedro Martinez, Carlos Delgado and Moises Alou–give me a break. Minaya spent too much time trying to build the Mets’ Latino fan base, rather than a team that can win.

Snippet – Life expectancy was up for both men and women, and whites and blacks. Although the gaps are closing, women continue to live longer, almost to 81, compared to about 75 for men. Among racial categories, white women have the highest life expectancy (81 years), followed by black women (about 77 years), white men (76) and black men (70). Health statisticians said they don’t have reliable data to calculate Hispanic life expectancy, but they hope to by next year.

Snippet – One governor who does have the resume is New Mexico’s Bill Richardson. When he was running for president this year, many dismissed Richardson as someone simply angling to become Clinton’s VP. He did seem deferential towards her during some of the debates. So it was a shock when he endorsed Obama in late March. A sputtering Bill Clinton, who spent Super Bowl Sunday trying to get Richardson to endorse his wife, was furious. One Clinton loyalist, James Carville, likened Richardson to Judas. Picking Richardson, who is Hispanic, might be an inspired choice, but it could anger the Clinton camp. (Still, don’t rule out Richardson as the running mate.)

Snippet – Taken together, the polls suggest that Arizona is firmly behind John McCain, with a large, but not insurmountable, margin separating him from Barack Obama. Key issues in Arizona are likely to be dominated by the economy as well as immigration. With a quickly growing Hispanic population, the candidate who is able to capture this demographic will have a big advantage on election night.
