The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (USDA) reported yesterday that almost one in four children living in the United States are food insecure. According to the 2009 report on Household Food Insecurity in the United States, there is a striking disparity in the prevalence of food insecurity among Hispanic children. More than two million Hispanic households with children were food insecure at least some time during the year, an increase of 37 percent over 2007, compared with non-Hispanic whites' households with children. The study also revealed that 177,000 non-white Hispanic households with children - an almost 50 percent increase over 2007 -- experienced very low food security, meaning that the food intake of one or more of the household children was reduced and their eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year because the household lacked money. This marks the largest increase in food insecurity rates among non-white Hispanic households with children since the USDA has been collecting data. Very low food insecurity for non-Hispanic whites rose 35 percent during the same period.

"Importantly, these numbers reflect the state of the nation one year ago, in 2008. Since then, the economy has significantly weakened, and there are likely many more children of varying ethnicity struggling with hunger than this report states," said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization. "It is an outrage that one in four children in this nation lives on the brink of hunger and doesn't have access to adequate amounts of nutritious food."

The new data reinforces recent findings from a research study (http://feedingamerica.org/newsroom/local-impact-study.aspx) conducted by Feeding America reflecting a dramatic increase in requests for emergency food assistance from food banks across the country. Conducted in September, the Feeding America study shows that more than half of its network food banks reported seeing more children as clients.

"This study reinforces the fact that there are likely millions of Hispanic families in need of food assistance who are not turning to our system for help. We believe this is due to a lack of awareness of emergency feeding programs and perhaps the stigma associated with asking for help," said Escarra. "We will continue to reach out to Hispanic communities to ensure families in need know they can turn to us in times of crisis.

"Feeding America's 200 food banks continue to work on the front lines feeding more than 25 million people each year, through our country's food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency feeding centers - more than 63,000 agencies in total," continued Escarra. "These establishments, many of which are grass root and faith based centers operated solely by volunteers, serve as an oasis for the more than 4 million people who seek relief weekly to help feed themselves and their families. Emergency food assistance is a critical link in the nation's response chain to help people through times of crisis."

Escarra observes, "Our network food banks are calling us every day, telling us that demand for emergency food is higher than it has ever been in our history. Feeding America will continue to work closely with our partners at USDA to ensure that the public and charitable sectors are keeping pace - as best we can - with the dramatically increasing needs for food assistance."

About Feeding America
Feeding America provides low-income individuals and families with the fuel to survive and even thrive. As the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity, our network members supply food to more than 25 million Americans each year, including 9 million children and 3 million seniors. Serving the entire United States, more than 200 member food banks support 63,000 agencies that address hunger in all of its forms. Feeding America is based in Chicago. For more information on how you can fight hunger in your community and across the country, visit http://www.feedingamerica.org.

AT&T* today announced that it will launch the fourth annual campaign to raise awareness of childhood cancer and collect donations to support PADRES Contra El Cancer (PADRES), a nonprofit organization committed to improving the quality of life for Latino children who are battling the disease, beginning November 22. AT&T set a goal of raising $300,000 this year, which would mean a total donation of $1 million to PADRES since the campaign's inception in 2007.

Throughout the six-week program, donations will be collected at more than 130 AT&T retail locations throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. AT&T is also offering a promotion throughout the duration of the campaign. When customers purchase an LG phone, AT&T will donate $20 to PADRES and the customer will receive a free LOUVER by Louis Verdad designer cap.

"AT&T has been a faithful partner in its commitment to PADRES, the Latino community and in its support of families coping with the devastating effects of childhood cancer," said Eva Longoria Parker, actress and PADRES national spokeswoman. "We're thrilled to launch this year's campaign and eager to reach the $1 million mark. We hope that the community will come together to help us reach that goal."

Cancer strikes approximately 1,500 children annually in California; nearly 50 percent of those affected are Latino. Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among children under 15 years old and is second only to accidents in most age groups.(1)

"In times like this it's more important than ever to support organizations such as PADRES that address vital community needs," said Andy Shibley, vice president and general manager of AT&T's Greater Los Angeles Area. "AT&T is pleased to hold the campaign again this year and applaud PADRES and its supporters for championing this cause, which has given hope to so many families."

During the 2008 campaign, AT&T donated $200,000 to PADRES to aid in the organization's mission. To date, AT&T has donated approximately $700,000 to PADRES.

As part of its commitment to serving the Hispanic community, Colgate-Palmolive is promoting diabetes awareness and the importance of proper oral care during November's American Diabetes Month. With approximately 2.5 million Hispanic Americans suffering from diabetes or insulin resistance syndrome (pre-diabetes), proper oral care and oral health education have become increasingly important among this at-risk community.

To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/colgate/39889/

The U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health describes the connection between good oral health and good overall health. Seeking proper dental care and maintaining good oral health are specifically vital to living well with diabetes. Emerging research supports a two-way relationship between diabetes and periodontitis (serious gum disease). Not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to serious gum disease, but if left untreated, serious gum disease may affect their ability to control blood glucose levels and potentially increase their risk of other complications of diabetes.

"As the global oral care leader in the Hispanic market, Colgate-Palmolive is dedicated providing oral health education to Hispanics managing diabetes and health professionals," said David Cardona, Marketing Director, U.S. Multicultural Marketing, Colgate-Palmolive. "Living with high blood sugar can take a toll on your entire body, including your teeth and gums. During American Diabetes Month, Colgate-Palmolive will continue to promote the association between oral health and diabetes, as well as the practical steps to help improve oral and possibly overall health."

As part of their multi-year educational collaboration, Colgate-Palmolive will continue to partner with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to help educate medical professionals and diabetes patients about the association between oral health and diabetes. As part of this year's outreach, Colgate-Palmolive will be targeting Hispanic Americans via in-store activities, educational materials and participation in the American Diabetes Association's 3rd Annual "Feria de Salud Por Tu Familia" ("Health Fair For Your Family"). This national, outdoor festival provides health screenings, cooking demonstrations and diabetes education.

Journalist and Colgate Total(R) spokesperson Myrka Dellanos, is supporting this educational initiative by publicly sharing her own experience living with diabetes and the importance of brushing daily with an anti-bacterial toothpaste, such as Colgate Total(R) toothpaste -- the brand most recommended by dentists.

"Diabetics don't have to take a step back; they can live life to the fullest," said Myrka. "Understanding the connection between oral health and diabetes and other health conditions is an important part of managing the condition. Daily brushing and flossing, regular dental check-ups and good blood glucose control are the best defenses against the oral complications of diabetes."

On behalf of Colgate Total(R), Myrka will be telling her story alongside Dr. R. Ivan Lugo, former President of the Hispanic Dental Association and a leading dental health advocate in the Hispanic community.

"The Latino population has the lowest incidence of dental visits when compared to any other ethnicity. This fact reinforces the importance of regular dental check-ups," Dr. Lugo said. "It is vital for diabetics to maintain good oral hygiene, floss regularly and brush twice a day with a toothpaste that has antibacterial benefits, like Colgate Total(R)."

About Colgate Total(R) Toothpaste
The unique formula of Colgate Total(R) toothpaste is clinically proven to actively fight germs for 12 hours. Colgate Total(R) toothpaste has an antibacterial formula and is the first and only toothpaste both approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and accepted by the American Dental Association to fight gingivitis. Using Colgate Total(R) toothpaste can promote better oral health and better oral health may help improve overall health. Colgate Total(R) is approved by the FDA to aid in the prevention of cavities, plaque and gingivitis. It has not been approved for the prevention or treatment of periodontitis or other diseases. Colgate Total is the number one toothpaste recommended most by dentists and hygienists. For more information about Colgate Total(R) toothpaste, visit www.ColgateTotal.com.
