Pan American Bank (Los Angeles) today announced its participation in and support of the East Los Angeles Complete Count Committee. The East Los Angeles Complete Count Committee is comprised of local community members, non-profits, businesses and government officials, working together to encourage the hard-to-count population in East Los Angeles to complete the census survey.

“East Los Angeles has historically been considered a ‘hard-to-count’ community based upon a number of factors that affect many of the local residents, including fear, misunderstanding and lack of interest,” said Pan American Bank President and CEO Jesse Torres. “What many residents do not understand is that the census figures determine how nearly $400 billion in federal funds are disbursed each year. As the only bank headquartered in East Los Angeles, Pan American Bank needs to do its part to ensure that our community receives its share of federal investment. Such investments include monies related to education, infrastructure, social services and other critical projects. This is important to our community.”

The U.S. government utilizes census information relative to population density, levels of income, age, and other factors to determine how to allocate funds across the Country. According to Torres, “studies have found that Los Angeles County lost more money than any other county because of undercounts during the 2000 census. East Los Angeles needs to get counted.”

On December 12, 2009, the East Los Angeles Complete Count Committee will host a Press Conference and Latino Census Summit. The event is aimed at reaching out to hard-to-count populations in Los Angeles County. The event will feature television and radio personalities, Latino advocates, and local elected officials. Following the press conference the East Los Angeles Complete Count Committee will host the first annual Latino Census Summit where expert panelists will deliver important information regarding the 2010 census.

Established in 1964, Pan American Bank is California’s oldest Latino-owned bank. Headquartered in East Los Angeles, Pan American Bank serves the needs of the Latino communities in Los Angeles and Santa Ana. Founded by former U.S. Treasurer Romana Acosta Banuelos, the Bank has stayed true to its mission of transforming and empowering Latino communities through banking relationships built on trust, service, respect, communication, and guidance.

Pan American Bank (Los Angeles) today announced that it will celebrate 45 years of service to the Latino community on October 24, 2009. Pan American Bank, California’s oldest Latino-owned bank, will honor founder and former U.S. Treasurer, Romana Acosta Banuelos, at a community celebration hosted at Pan American Bank’s headquarters.

“Pan American Bank and Mrs. Banuelos pioneered Latino-focused banking decades before it became the attractive niche that it is today. Mrs. Banuelos’ rags to riches background provided her with a firsthand example of what could be accomplished within the Latino community,” said Pan American Bank President and CEO Jesse Torres. “Nearly half a century ago and without the benefit of today’s census figures showing Latinos as the emerging market, Mrs. Banuelos saw the importance of serving underbanked Latino entrepreneurs and families in East Los Angeles and Santa Ana. Not only did she have the vision to serve Latinos at a time when it was considered financially and politically risky, she set up shop in the middle of East Los Angeles, the hub of Latino activity in Southern California.”

Mrs. Romana Acosta Banuelos is a true American rags to riches story that took Mrs. Banuelos from a poor Arizona mining town to the role of U.S. Treasurer, demonstrating to the Country, the world and most importantly, other Latinos, that Latino women are able to serve at the highest level of government. But more importantly, Mrs. Banuelos’ story demonstrates that success at the highest level is not dependent on socioeconomic status but is based on dedication and a commitment to personal excellence.

After being born in Arizona in 1925, Mrs. Banuelos and her family left for Mexico during the Great Depression and later returned to found, in 1949, one of California’s most successful independent food companies, Ramona’s Mexican Food Products, Inc. After the successful launch of Ramona’s Mexican Food Products, Mrs. Banuelos founded Pan American Bank in 1964 as a way to assist underbanked Latino small business owners and consumers. Mrs. Banuelos was later appointed as the 34th Treasurer of the United States. Her appointment made her the first Latino U.S. Treasurer and the highest ranking Latino in the federal government.

On October 24, 2009, Pan American Bank will publicly honor Mrs. Banuelos at a ceremony that will highlight Mrs. Banuelos’ accomplishments and Pan American Bank’s 45 years of service to the Latino community. The event will feature presentations by local dignitaries, music, folkloric dancers, children’s activities and food.

WHAT: Celebration Pan American Bank and Romana Acosta Banuelos
WHERE: Pan American Bank, 3626 East First Street, Los Angeles, CA 90063
WHEN: Saturday, October 24, 2009 – 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
Ceremony will take place at 12 noon.
QUESTIONS:

Tony Ramirez, (323) 264-3310, TRamirez@PanAmericanBank.us

Originally established in 1964 as Pan American National Bank, Pan American Bank, a Latino-owned bank headquartered in East Los Angeles, serves the needs of the Latino community in Los Angeles and Santa Ana. Founded by former U.S Treasurer Romana Acosta Banuelos, the Bank has stayed true to its mission of transforming and empowering Latino communities through banking relationships built on trust, service, respect, communication, and guidance.

Comerica's commitment to diversity has been recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine, which ranks the Dallas-headquartered bank No. 5 in its annual "Top 60 Diversity Elite Scorecard."

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010807/CMALOGO )

According to the September issue of Hispanic Business Magazine, consideration for the 2009 "Diversity Elite" involved analysis of more than 32 variables that measure a company's commitment to Hispanic hiring, promotion, marketing, philanthropy and supplier diversity. Comerica received its highest marks from the publication in the categories of board, leadership and personnel; and supplier diversity.

"At Comerica it's been our belief that a strong commitment to diversity must start with our leadership team," said Linda Forte, Comerica Bank senior vice president of Business Affairs and chief diversity officer. "Therefore it is particularly gratifying to be recognized for having representation and a commitment to Hispanic and other minority employees at the highest levels of the organization, including our board."

"In addition, we understand the challenges being faced by all suppliers in today's economic environment, so it also means a great deal that we received a high grade for supplier diversity."

To compile its 2009 Diversity Elite Scorecard, Hispanic Business Magazine reported contacting the top Fortune 1000 companies, American subsidiaries of Global 500 companies, and large U.S. public and private companies.

Comerica's inclusion on the "Diversity Elite Scorecard" follows a recent announcement from LATINA Style Magazine, which ranked Comerica 23rd on its LATINA Style 50 Report. LATINA Style annually identifies American corporations that are providing the best career opportunities for Latinas.

"Maintaining and improving on our diversity commitment, requires meeting the expectations of the communities we serve," said Monica Martinez, vice president of National Hispanic Business Affairs for Comerica Bank. "We are proud of our recent honors from nationally recognized publications like Hispanic Business Magazine and LATINA Style that help state our case for being the bank of choice in the Hispanic community."

Comerica Incorporated is a financial services company strategically aligned by three business segments: Business Bank, Retail Bank, and Wealth & Institutional Management. In addition to Texas, Comerica Bank locations can be found in Arizona, California, Florida and Michigan, with select businesses operating in several other states, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
