Texas Right of Way Associates/TRWA, Inc. announced today they are doing business as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE).

“I am pleased to announce TRWA, Inc. is the only Hispanic Minority Business Enterprise Right of Way Acquisitions and Land Survey company doing business in the Barnett Shale and Haynesville Shale plays” Don Valden, CEO, TRWA, Inc. was quoted.

“My brother Ted Valdez, President, and I came to realize that many energy companies in the Barnett Shale and the Haynesville Shale plays want to do business with minority owned companies however there are only a few women owned companies (Women Minority Business Enterprise) and no Hispanic owned companies, until now.” Valden said.

Though the two are brothers, Don Valden, 13 years Ted’s senior, has a slightly different last name that he said reflects an earlier social climate in Texas. “When I was growing up, having a Latin surname could be a disadvantage in the business world,” he said. “We have two uncles who were in business and they changed their names as well – just one letter difference.”

Don Valden has been in the oil & gas industry for over 28 years and in 2003 was one of the first right of way acquisition agents in the Barnett Shale play. “I have worked for some of the top energy companies in the world such as Koch Industries, Devon Energy and EOG Resources.” Valden said.

TRWA, Inc. has staffed energy companies with trained Right of Way agents, Land Title agents and Administrators for several years.

TRWA, Inc. offers professional Land Survey services in the Barnett Shale and the Haynesville Shale plays as well.

The Barnett Shale Training Center and the Haynesville Shale Training Center is where Mr. Valden has been teaching courses in Right of Way acquisitions, negotiations, land title research, engineering, plats, land value, document preparation and pipeline & utility construction. Mr. Valden has hundreds of graduates working in the field in many states around the USA.

Lopez Negrete Communications, the second largest independent Hispanic owned and operated agency in the country, earned the Gold for its “El Santa Holiday Card” at the 54th Annual Art Directors Club of Houston (ADCh) Awards Show. The agency was also recognized with two Silvers and two Bronzes in the Advertising category for esteemed clients Bank of America, Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Wal-Mart Stores.

“Houston has always had a world-class design community that has been recognized far and wide. As such, the ADCh Awards Show has never been easy to win in – but when you do, it’s a source of great pride and a sense of accomplishment,” said Alex López Negrete, president, CEO and chief creative officer of Lopez Negrete Communications.

The piece which won the ADCh Gold is the agency’s 2008 holiday card. On the cover it depicts Santa Claus with his flowing white beard, red suit and beaming eyes, but with a luchador (a Mexican wrestling suit) mask and cape, posed in a stance ready to take on those on his “naughty” list. The cover of the card reads like a throwback comic book: bright reds and blues, punchy catchphrases in 3-D text, and the kitschy use of apostrophes and exclamation marks. The inside re-imagines the old Christmas jingle “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” with wrestling slang, while wishing the recipient a happy holiday.

“It’s extraordinarily meaningful to us that the piece that won the Gold was one of the last pieces written by our esteemed friend and colleague, Brett Elliott. This piece has the impish wit that was his mark. It’s a sweet win. I know he’s smiling,” expressed López Negrete.

Along with the aforementioned Gold, the agency also brought home two Silvers and two Bronzes in the Advertising category. “The Sum,” winner of the Silver in Television (non-English) and “Step Up,” “Tango,” “Pickup,” and “School Dance” were Silver award winners for Television Series. All were created for long-time Lopez Negrete client Bank of America. The Bronzes went to Wal-Mart and to Dr Pepper Snapple Group, for the television ads “Wishful Thinking” and “Sevenísima,” respectively.

All winning work was overseen creatively by López Negrete as CCO with the creative department,

- more -

as a whole, led by Vice President/Creative Director Javier Gonzalez-Herba. The “El Santa Holiday Card” team is comprised of Luis Gonzalez, executive creative director; Joshua Patron, associate creative director; Jorge Leza and Mimi Boneta, art directors; Brett Elliott, copywriter; and Miguel Rios, illustrator. The agency’s Bank of America team consists of Gonzalez; Patron; Art Director Gwendolyne Echenagucia; Copywriter Alonso Nuñez; Directory of Broadcast Production Marlo Baker; and Executive Group Account Director Marisol Cruz. The group responsible for Wal-Mart’s Vision Center Bronze award winner is Creative Director Miguel Moreno; Associate Creative Director Olga Reyes; Art Director Karen Kain; Copywriter Pablo Carpintero; Broadcast Producer Claudio Milczewski; and Executive Group Account Director Frank Sendra. And the “Sevenisima” Bronze honor can be credited to Gonzalez, Echenagucia, and Baker.

The ADCh Gold rounds off a successful award season for Lopez Negrete. In 2009 the agency was honored with 45 ADDY® Awards from the American Advertising Federation - Houston, including its sixth consecutive Best of Show, later in the year, the agency was also awarded a coveted ARF David Ogilvy Award – the first multicultural trophy awarded in the history of these awards.

The Art Directors Club of Houston is a nonprofit organization for those involved in all aspects of advertising and graphic design. The ADCh was founded in 1955, and members include art directors, graphic designers, production artists, copywriters, photographers, stylists, illustrators, media producers, and others in related fields, including students and teachers.

Crusading education coverage, investigations that saved lives of liver transplant patients, and a detailed telling of the Bush administration's economic legacy headlined the excellent work honored in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' 2009 Journalism Awards announced this week.

Among the eight awards given, the honor in the TV Investigative category went to a probe into a cover up by authorities to hide the number of suicides by veterans, led by CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian and producer Pia Malbran. A revealing look at the dangerous and often horrendous trek by Central Americans crossing through Mexico to get to the U.S. by La Opinión writer Gardenia Mendoza Aguilar won this year's Guillermo Martinez Marquez Award for Latin American Reporting.

"Despite less participation than in previous years, the quality of the work was just outstanding, both in its range of topics and in the depth of talent these colleagues demonstrated by what they put on the page or on the air," said NAHJ Executive Director Iván Román.

Luis Fábregas and Andrew Contin of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review were honored in the Print Investigative category for their probe into how a liver transplant system driven by profit was actually killing people and spurred reforms which have saved lives. In the Television Documentary category, judges cited excellent editing, imagery and treatment of the topic to award TVE Espana's Jose Jimenez Pons and Llucía Oliva de la Esperanza for their work on how growing poverty in the U.S. under the Bush administration is affecting people, including many Latinos.

The Detroit News' editorial writer Amber Arellano's crusading pieces using investigative journalism to reveal the true magnitude of the black and Latino male high-school dropout problem received the award for Print Commentary. Winning in the Print Feature category, the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Frederick Melo and Brandi Jade Thomas gave readers a well-written immigrant-dreams-gone-bad tale from the hometown Guatemalan village of an undocumented immigrant accused of striking a school bus with her minivan in Minnesota and killing four children.

Julio Rivera Saniel of WKAQ 580 Univision Radio in Puerto Rico, won the Radio Reporting award for his look into the life and resistance in San Juan's poor community of La Perla. A CBS News team led by correspondent Byron Pitts detailing the suffering of a family of a deceased Marine sergeant whose skin cancer was misdiagnosed while serving in Iraq won in the Television Feature Large Market category.

For more information and the judge's comments on the winners and to see the work being honored, click here, http://www.nahj.org/awards/2009/09awardwinners.shtml

Several categories were declared vacant by the judges due to a lack of participation in an exceptionally difficult economic and professional year for journalists and the news media industry. NAHJ also decided not to give its most prestigious ñ awards in 2009, usually presented at the Annual Noche de Triunfos Journalism Awards Gala, which was cancelled this year. The ñ Awards include the Leadership Award, the Emerging Journalist Award and others.

Honors in all the categories and the ñ awards are expected to be given in 2010 as NAHJ holds the often inspiring gala next fall.

Founded in 1984, NAHJ's mission is to increase the percentage of Latinos working in our nation's newsrooms and to improve news coverage of the Latino community. NAHJ is the nation's largest professional organization for Latino journalists with more than 1,400 members working in English and Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast and online media.
