Pan American Bank (Los Angeles) today announced that it will celebrate 45 years of service to the Latino community on October 24, 2009. Pan American Bank, California’s oldest Latino-owned bank, will honor founder and former U.S. Treasurer, Romana Acosta Banuelos, at a community celebration hosted at Pan American Bank’s headquarters.

“Pan American Bank and Mrs. Banuelos pioneered Latino-focused banking decades before it became the attractive niche that it is today. Mrs. Banuelos’ rags to riches background provided her with a firsthand example of what could be accomplished within the Latino community,” said Pan American Bank President and CEO Jesse Torres. “Nearly half a century ago and without the benefit of today’s census figures showing Latinos as the emerging market, Mrs. Banuelos saw the importance of serving underbanked Latino entrepreneurs and families in East Los Angeles and Santa Ana. Not only did she have the vision to serve Latinos at a time when it was considered financially and politically risky, she set up shop in the middle of East Los Angeles, the hub of Latino activity in Southern California.”

Mrs. Romana Acosta Banuelos is a true American rags to riches story that took Mrs. Banuelos from a poor Arizona mining town to the role of U.S. Treasurer, demonstrating to the Country, the world and most importantly, other Latinos, that Latino women are able to serve at the highest level of government. But more importantly, Mrs. Banuelos’ story demonstrates that success at the highest level is not dependent on socioeconomic status but is based on dedication and a commitment to personal excellence.

After being born in Arizona in 1925, Mrs. Banuelos and her family left for Mexico during the Great Depression and later returned to found, in 1949, one of California’s most successful independent food companies, Ramona’s Mexican Food Products, Inc. After the successful launch of Ramona’s Mexican Food Products, Mrs. Banuelos founded Pan American Bank in 1964 as a way to assist underbanked Latino small business owners and consumers. Mrs. Banuelos was later appointed as the 34th Treasurer of the United States. Her appointment made her the first Latino U.S. Treasurer and the highest ranking Latino in the federal government.

On October 24, 2009, Pan American Bank will publicly honor Mrs. Banuelos at a ceremony that will highlight Mrs. Banuelos’ accomplishments and Pan American Bank’s 45 years of service to the Latino community. The event will feature presentations by local dignitaries, music, folkloric dancers, children’s activities and food.

WHAT: Celebration Pan American Bank and Romana Acosta Banuelos
WHERE: Pan American Bank, 3626 East First Street, Los Angeles, CA 90063
WHEN: Saturday, October 24, 2009 – 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
Ceremony will take place at 12 noon.
QUESTIONS:

Tony Ramirez, (323) 264-3310, TRamirez@PanAmericanBank.us

Originally established in 1964 as Pan American National Bank, Pan American Bank, a Latino-owned bank headquartered in East Los Angeles, serves the needs of the Latino community in Los Angeles and Santa Ana. Founded by former U.S Treasurer Romana Acosta Banuelos, the Bank has stayed true to its mission of transforming and empowering Latino communities through banking relationships built on trust, service, respect, communication, and guidance.

Comerica's commitment to diversity has been recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine, which ranks the Dallas-headquartered bank No. 5 in its annual "Top 60 Diversity Elite Scorecard."

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010807/CMALOGO )

According to the September issue of Hispanic Business Magazine, consideration for the 2009 "Diversity Elite" involved analysis of more than 32 variables that measure a company's commitment to Hispanic hiring, promotion, marketing, philanthropy and supplier diversity. Comerica received its highest marks from the publication in the categories of board, leadership and personnel; and supplier diversity.

"At Comerica it's been our belief that a strong commitment to diversity must start with our leadership team," said Linda Forte, Comerica Bank senior vice president of Business Affairs and chief diversity officer. "Therefore it is particularly gratifying to be recognized for having representation and a commitment to Hispanic and other minority employees at the highest levels of the organization, including our board."

"In addition, we understand the challenges being faced by all suppliers in today's economic environment, so it also means a great deal that we received a high grade for supplier diversity."

To compile its 2009 Diversity Elite Scorecard, Hispanic Business Magazine reported contacting the top Fortune 1000 companies, American subsidiaries of Global 500 companies, and large U.S. public and private companies.

Comerica's inclusion on the "Diversity Elite Scorecard" follows a recent announcement from LATINA Style Magazine, which ranked Comerica 23rd on its LATINA Style 50 Report. LATINA Style annually identifies American corporations that are providing the best career opportunities for Latinas.

"Maintaining and improving on our diversity commitment, requires meeting the expectations of the communities we serve," said Monica Martinez, vice president of National Hispanic Business Affairs for Comerica Bank. "We are proud of our recent honors from nationally recognized publications like Hispanic Business Magazine and LATINA Style that help state our case for being the bank of choice in the Hispanic community."

Comerica Incorporated is a financial services company strategically aligned by three business segments: Business Bank, Retail Bank, and Wealth & Institutional Management. In addition to Texas, Comerica Bank locations can be found in Arizona, California, Florida and Michigan, with select businesses operating in several other states, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
The foreclosure crisis has brought a particular set of issues to Latino immigrants in the Kansas City area. Because of language barriers and the lack of a credit history, many immigrants are vulnerable to predatory lenders. They haven’t faced more foreclosures than other groups. But when they do have housing problems, there are a few places where they can turn for help.

When Peoples Bancorp of North Carolina noticed explosive growth in the state’s Hispanic population — now nearly 600,000 strong and 7 percent of the state’s residents — it saw an opportunity.

But rather than just put up some Spanish-language signs and hire a few bilingual tellers, the commercial bank established an entirely new subsidiary. That subsidiary — Banco de la Gente — targets Latino customers. With branches in the Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham areas of the state, where the numbers of Hispanic residents have been rising particularly fast, Banco de la Gente caters to special needs in Hispanic communities. It offers extended hours, a choice of remittance methods and accounts with disability insurance.

And no wonder. North Carolina’s Hispanic population — nearly three-quarters of which is Mexican in origin — contributed more than $9 billion to the state’s economy in 2004 through purchases, taxes and labor at a net cost to the state of $61 million, according to a 2006 study by the University of North Carolina. The study projects that Hispanics’ contribution to the state’s economy could jump to $18 billion in 2009.

John Kasarda, who co-authored the study, said Hispanic workers have become indispensable to North Carolina’s economy. “Without Hispanic workers, some industries would simply collapse or wouldn’t be as competitive as they are,” he said.

For example, if not for Hispanic workers, output of the North Carolina construction industry would have been significantly lower while annual labor costs would have been nearly $1 billion higher, according to Kasarda. He said some North Carolina companies that employ large numbers of Latinos are among the best in their industries. And all types of businesses benefit: “Even French restaurants have Mexican chefs,” Kasarda said.

North Carolina is just one state where Hispanics are contributing substantially to local economies and in return seeing their buying power soar. Similar trends are occurring across much of the United States, whetting business appetites for a bite of the $951 billion that represents the buying power, or disposable income, held by U.S. Hispanics in 2008.

Hispanic purchasing power is projected to continue its fast-paced growth. The University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth predicts that Hispanics will possess disposable income of more than $1 trillion by 2010 and will continue seeing that buying power grow far into the future because the U.S. Hispanic community has the highest birth rate in the country.

Chiqui Cartagena, the author of Latino Boom, a book about the Hispanic market, said U.S. Hispanics will make up 40 percent of new home buyers over the next 20 years. ( The National Association of Home Builders reported in its most recent 2007 American housing survey that Hispanics made up 10 percent of new home buyers. )

But the economic clout of Latinos is not just due to population growth. Latinos lead in small-business formation among all ethnic groups, and a majority of new Latino businesses are owned by women, according to the Kauffman Foundation, a nonprofit group that promotes entrepreneurship.

TAPPING INTO U.S. HISPANIC MARKET

Despite a major push into the Hispanic consumer market by mostly service companies, a considerable portion of that market lies untapped by U.S. businesses because of cultural barriers, according to one analyst.

“Not all companies are culturally competent enough to capture as much of the Hispanic consumer market as they could,” said Jim Estrada, president of Estrada Communications Group Inc. of Austin, Texas.

U.S. businesses have made great progress in reaching out to Hispanic consumers since the early 1970s, when businesses began translating their advertisements and marketing materials into Spanish, Estrada said. They have realized the need to better understand Hispanic cultural factors and have sought the services of specialized marketing firms such as Estrada’s to advise them on how to pitch their products and services to Latinos.

Nevertheless, there are still geographic areas and segments of the Hispanic market that are underserved, according to Estrada. Latino small businesses multiply quickly to fill the needs of the U.S. Hispanic community, especially in inner cities.

Mindful of the benefits that Hispanic entrepreneurs bring to the U.S. economy, the University of North Carolina study recommends vigorous support to help them overcome obstacles such as poor English-language ability and lack of a credit history. The growing business class among U.S. Hispanics will promote further economic growth in communities throughout the United States, according to analysts.

The awards will be given on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the KPBS Copley Telecommunication Center in San Diego.

The honorees will be formally recognized as part of the 12th Annual Local Heroes Awards, which Union Bank sponsors in conjunction with public television station KPBS. The network will also broadcast video profiles of the honorees throughout its Hispanic Heritage Month programming from September 15 to October 15.

"Union Bank is proud to recognize the contributions of these local heroes who have generously given their wisdom, time and resources to enrich our communities," said George Ramirez, senior vice president and head of Priority Banking(R) at Union Bank. "We are delighted to again partner with KPBS as we recognize these individuals who personify our core values of diversity and community involvement."

"We are honored to be hosting this event and again partner with Union Bank to recognize this year's Local Heroes," said Tom Karlo, general manager of KPBS. "Every year, KPBS has the pleasure of getting to know a new group of distinguished honorees and telling their stories to the San Diego community."

The 2009 honorees are:

Ruben Barrales is president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. He was the first Latino elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 1992 and has been listed as one of Hispanic Business Magazine's "100 Most Influential Hispanics" three times within the past decade.

Sarita Fuentes is the principal of Monarch School. As the principal, Fuentes helps serve the community's homeless youth, ages seven to 18, and mentors children to lead productive lives. Under her leadership, the school has exceeded its Academic Performance Index score for six consecutive years and also implemented the Graduate Support Program.
Catalina Valencia is the executive vice president (EVP) and general counsel for Aero Financial, where she is responsible for the company's global legal and regulatory affairs. She has a widespread background in telecommunications, and prior to Aero Financial, Valencia was the co-founder and executive for FanBox, an Internet start-up recognized as host to the world's largest mobile community. She has served on the board of the Mexican and American Solidarity Foundation and also served as the chair of the Leadership Institute of the Chicana/Latina Foundation. Valencia was awarded the Corporate Achievement Award by Vista magazine for three consecutive years.

Dr. Jorge Valerdi is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
