To help business owners, the Retail Merchants Association invited Lisa Zajur, director of the Spanish Academy & Cultural Institute in Midlothian, to speak at its monthly breakfast meeting.

Her company teaches several courses on how employees and employers in different industries can work together despite language and cultural differences."

"Praying for their families Rosa Hernandez panicked when she saw several immigration officials standing outside her screen door.

In the Honduran family of six, only Hernandez's husband is in the U.S. legally.

"My heart tore," she said in Spanish to about 60 people gathered recently for a monthly service at Southside Church of the Nazarene in Chesterfield County."

"More than three dozen people gathered yesterday evening across the street from the nearly completed federal courthouse in downtown Richmond to protest Wednesday's immigration raid there.

"Modesta Tadeo and her four children moved from Mexico to join her husband in Chesterfield County three years ago. Depending on where you fall politically, the family of immigrants is either “undocumented” or “illegal.” They don’t have Social Security numbers, but last Thursday night they stopped by Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church on Hull Street Road to pay their taxes.

They started paying taxes three years ago, Tadeo says through an interpreter while waiting in line with her husband and nephew. At first, just pulling all the documents together was nerve-racking. Now it’s routine, and not just for them.

“Many people are paying their taxes,” Tadeo says."

"The air smells like chlorine and cleaning product. Outside, it’s raining hard, and everyone’s hair and clothes are wet. Four folding tables dressed up with a red tablecloth offer Buffalo wings, chicken skewers and egg rolls. Most of the food’s untouched.

In Richmond’s Southwood community, about 70 Hispanics have gathered in this stuffy pool house to meet with city police about stemming crime in the neighborhood. Most of the residents who’ve come are interested in acquiring driver’s licenses, asking questions about police procedure and learning more about local laws.

Most of the Hispanics in the room are also illegal immigrants. "

"With Prince William County officials cracking down on illegal immigrants, experts said last week that they think other Virginia counties might follow suit. We checked with 20 counties and cities in the Richmond region to find out whether officials there have considered any measures to identify illegal immigrants or deny them services -- as Prince William has -- or whether the issue of immigration is a regular topic at board meetings."

"Arteagas story is an example of how a resource-challenged mental-health system is reaching out to immigrant communities in the Richmond area. Arteaga, who is from Mexico, was fortunate to find a mental-health therapist who speaks Spanish. She speaks English, but is more comfortable with Spanish. Shaffer could communicate effectively with her and her son. "As the various groups of immigrants increase .Â¤.Â¤. it really challenges the health system to find ways to reach out to people that need our services," said Michael OConnor, executive director of Henrico County Mental Health and Retardation Services. Its difficult to find Hispanic and Asians and other minorities in the mental-health field. "There is a lot of competition for minorities who have those credentials," he said."

"The three natives of Colombia were part of a group of Latino models posing for photographer John Henley, who was shooting thousands of frames, freezing the happy expressions, family walks, group interactions and single portraits. The photo shoot in Henrico County was the first of at least three planned by Modelogic Wilhelmina, a modeling agency in Richmond. The 30 models were selected from an initial Latino casting recently for a follow-up photo shoot to create a division of local Hispanic talent to meet the increasing demand from busi nesses and advertising and production companies, said President Stacie Vanchieri."

Bills dealing with illegal immigrants fare poorly – Virginia

"Virginia General Assembly members introduced dozens of bills this year to toughen the commonwealth’s laws governing illegal immigration, but lawmakers left Richmond without sending any of them to Gov. Tim Kaine’s desk. “A lot of those bills were ridiculous and were going to do more harm than good,” said Sen. Russell Potts, R-Winchester, the chairman of the Senate committee that killed several of the proposals. “The federal government is in charge of immigration. The state should stay out of it.”"
