In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, ETS is displaying 20 works of art from the Chicano art collection of the Hispanic Research Center (HRC) at Arizona State University. The show is open to the public and is on display in Conant Hall, Lounge B and in the Brodsky Gallery of the Chauncey Conference Center, both on the grounds of ETS.

The exhibit will run all month and features serigraphs and lithographs by recognized Chicano artists that were commissioned by the HRC. Most of them were included in a recent exhibit in Germany titled "Contemporary Art by U.S. Latinas/os."

On September 30, Gary D. Keller, Arizona State University Regents' Professor and HRC Director, will give a talk about the contemporary art pieces on display. Keller is the author of "Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art: Artists, Works, Culture, and Education."

In addition to the art exhibit, ETS plans to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month by displaying recent books by and about Hispanic Americans, releasing a Tomás Rivera Lecture, and hosting speakers in Princeton and San Antonio.

ETS's Policy Information Center will release the annual Tomás Rivera Lecture from the 2009 American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) conference this week. Titled "Hispanicity and Educational Inequality: Risks, Opportunities and the Nation's Future," the lecture was delivered by Marta Tienda, a professor of sociology at Princeton University. It honors the memory of one of the first Hispanic trustees at ETS and noted Hispanic educator, Tomás Rivera.

On October 7, Loui Olivas, founder and President of AAHHE, will speak in Princeton on the implications of a Latino majority in American classrooms. AAHHE seeks to grow the pipeline of Hispanic higher education faculty and administrators; to bring issues pertinent to Hispanics to the attention of the larger academic community; and to recognize Hispanic achievements in higher education. ETS and AAHHE work together each year on a doctoral dissertation competition among Hispanic scholars.

On October 14, Strategic Alliances & Public Affairs Executive Frank Gómez will address employees in the San Antonio Office.

About Hispanic Heritage Month

Forty-one years ago, in September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. The week was to include September 15 and 16, since September 15 marks the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18, respectively. In 1988, the observance was extended to a month.

Hispanics and non-Hispanics honor the month in various ways. ETS has commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month since 2003 by organizing activities that include poetry recitals, drives for the Children's Home Society of New Jersey's CUNA project, arts and crafts, thematic exhibits (e.g., philately and numismatics), food, dance, literature, music recitals and special menus in the cafeteria.

ETS has also welcomed noted Latino leaders including Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU); ETS Trustee Arturo Pacheco; Gilbert Casellas, diversity lawyer and former Equal Employment Opportunity Commission chair; Ronald Blackburn-Moreno, President and CEO of the ASPIRA Association; Juan Andrade, Jr., President of the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute; and Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, retired Lieutenant Colonel and founder of Educational Achievement Services.
