"The Hispanic Latino Minority Health Coalition's executive director, Cecilia Acosta, was recently featured in Indianapolis Woman for her move to help start an obesity prevention program in her coalition, and has also made a change in her own life and diet because of the program she implemented.

The Coalition, which works to assess, design, develop, implement and evaluate programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for each minority group represented, asked Acosta to come up with the obesity prevention program, and in doing so, she lost 30 pounds because she learned how to change her diet and was able to implement exercise to her daily routine.

"We have to be the examples," said Acosta. "I decided to start with my self. I was able to organize myself, and that helped me to improve other areas in my life."
"When I moved here . . . I was educating people about my culture," said Cindy, who was born in Mexico.
That's now changed at Pike and other area schools as more and more Hispanics move into Indianapolis. According to the U.S. Census, they are the fastest-growing population in Marion County. At Northwest and George Washington high schools, for example, Hispanic students make up 17 and 21 percent, respectively, of the high-school populations."

"In the spirit of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Language Line Services, the global leader of language interpretation, and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and local Hispanic community leaders have announced the launch of Your World. Your LanguageSM. in Indianapolis. The service will be available to Indianapolis residents and businesses Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.

Your World. Your Language. easily connects limited-English-speaking consumers with businesses so the consumers can independently conduct their day-to-day affairs. Created by Language Line Services and operated by AT&T, this free over-the-phone interpretation service provides limited-English-speaking consumers with telephone-based interpreters to access banking, insurance, telephone, and other vital business services within a consumer’s local metro area.

Indiana was selected as the second state in a nationwide roll out because of its fast-growing immigrant population. More than 34 percent of Indiana’s foreign-born population entered the U.S. in the past five years, and the state is an increasingly popular place for immigrants to live because of its friendly business economy and diverse commerce community. As a result, more than 9 percent of Indianapolis residents now speak a language other than English at home.

“Imagine that you are a recent immigrant to Indianapolis from Mexico who speaks little, if any, English, and you want to apply for a loan to purchase a new home,” said Louis Provenzano, Language Line Services’ president and chief operating officer. “Naturally, you’d prefer to speak to the bank in your own language to ensure that everything is just right. Until now, your options were very limited, but with Your World. Your Language., a whole new era of communication has arrived.”

By dialing 1-888-855-0811 and 1-877-TU-LINEA (885-4632) for Spanish-speaking consumers, Indianapolis’ growing population of multilingual residents, foreign business travelers and visitors can talk in their own languages to a host of key commercial, retail and entertainment businesses anytime and at no charge. Callers dial in to an easy-to-navigate menu that first prompts them to select their preferred language and then a particular business category to call. A specially trained Language Line Services interpreter then joins the line, connects the caller to the selected business and remains on the line to carry out communication between the consumer and the business’s English-speaking customer representative.

Provenzano also noted that most of these limited-English-speaking residents live in tight knit multilingual communities with niche economies, so only limited English is needed. As a result, they have difficulty conducting business outside their neighborhoods and accessing vital community services without the assistance of English-speaking friends and family members.

“AT&T is proud to partner with Language Line Services on this important service to better serve the diverse communities in Indiana,” said Hardmon Williams, vice president and general manager, AT&T Indiana Consumer Markets. “We’re committed to ensure a seamless communication process for our customers, and Your World. Your Language. now makes this possible for everyone, despite what languages they speak.”

Your World. Your Language. currently serves customers in eight languages, including: Cantonese (Chinese), Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (Chinese), Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Originally launched in San Francisco, the telephone-based interpretation service is now available throughout most of California and will roll out nationwide by the close of 2008.

Your World. Your Language. is free for consumers. Businesses that join the WorldPartnerSM network to sell their products and services through Your World. Your Language. are charged on a per-call basis and pay only for calls placed through the service to their customer representatives.

Sample banking, credit card, insurance, health, telephone, utility, travel, transportation, city and social service organizations signed on to offer their services to limited-English-speaking residents through Your World. Your Language. include: 1-800-Dentist; AT&T Allstate Insurance; CitiBank; city of Indianapolis Government Services; DISH Network; Greyline Tours; Macy's; Orbitz; State Farm Insurance; SuperShuttle; Ticketmaster and YellowCab. For more information or a complete listing of Your World. Your Language. business partners, visit www.YourWorldYourLanguage.com."

The 35-year-old Venezuelan rookie hit the SAFER barrier between turns one and two nose-first on Lap 66. She walked away from the accident and was cleared minutes later by track medical personnel.

"This is so sad," said Duno, the first female Hispanic driver to make the race. "Im angry because my team was so fantastic.""

With her looks and a willingness to sign more autographs than everyone else combined, she has quickly become a fan favourite in Gasoline Alley. Never mind that she has little chance of winning the 200-lap event.

"I am Milka," she said, breaking into a charming smile. "This is my personality."

Duno expresses no political views of her own and shrugs off the chilly relations between her homeland and the country where she races."

"Best of Indy salsa band Orquesta Bravo has been invited to participate in the third Indiana Festival at Conner Prairie. On Saturday, June 2, 2007, beginning at 4:00 p.m., Orquesta Bravo will appear and perform its hot and sultry sounds as the representative of Latin music in Indianapolis and its growing Hispanic community.

Orquesta Bravo is honored to be part of this event where for two days Conner Prairie comes out of the past and into the present, to move history forward depicting present-day Indianapolis and its diverse people. The festival celebrates the arts, music and people of the Midwest. This two-day multi-cultural festival will be held on five acres of Conner Prairies rolling hills and will feature three stages of entertainment, 100 artists, a kids activity area and stage, a cultural game tent and a variety of ethnic cuisines. Conner Prairie first started the Indiana Festival in 2005 and it was a big success. The theme of the festival highlights the diversity of Indiana. People from all around the world now call themselves a Hoosier. Because diversity is important to Orquesta Bravo, who proudly represents at least six countries, including USA, this festival is a perfect fit. If you have never visited Conner Prairie, this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. If you have never experienced Orquesta Bravo, this would be the perfect setting in which to do so. Admission: in advance through June 1 at Sky Bank and Marsh Supermarkets, $1/youth 2-12 & $6/adult; at the gate, $2/youth 2-12 & $7/adult.

Orquesta Bravo has undergone many positive changes and continues to strive to be the best Latin musical representative of our City and State. Under the leadership of Stacie Kidwell Sandoval on stage, the group has continued to solidify their music, expand their repertoire and intensify their entertainment. Recently, Raul Padro had undertaken the music directorship of the group and the impact of his contribution can already be felt. As always, the group is comprised of the best and most professional musicians Indiana has to offer. Ms. Kidwell is the owner of the local real estate firm, Home Free Realy, LLC. Recently, Ms. Kidwell also had a hand in creating the Stacie Sandoval Tropical Jazz Quartet, a smaller group performing jazz standards and boleros and featuring local icon Ken Fary on the piano. You can see the Stacie Sandoval Tropical Jazz Quartet next at The Chatterbox on Friday, June 22.

In the near future, Orquesta Bravo can be seen locally at The Jazz Kitchen Friday, June 8th, the City of Lawrence 4th of July Festival Friday, June 29th, and Indianapolis Zoos Animals and All That Jazz Thursday, July 26th.

Orquesta Bravo can be reached through their website at www.orquestabravo.com or by calling 317 450-0310. Conner Prairie can be reached through their website at www.connerprairie.org or by calling 317 776-6000.
