Hawaii Latin Chamber Co-Sponsors Minority Business Certification Workshops

"Honolulu, Hawaii – Latin Business Hawaii LBH is co-sponsoring a workshop series with the Northern California Minority Supplier Development Council NCMSDC, a 501c3 non-profit.

The NCMSDC certifies minority businesses in Hawaii -- Hawaiian, Asian Pacific, Hispanic, African-American, Asian Indian & Native American -- as Minority Business Enterprises MBEs.

This certification qualifies them to become minority vendors for national corporations. As a result, NCMSDC and LBH are co-sponsoring a six-workshop series, at the Hawaii Women’s Business Center, from August 24th to August 26th.

There will be a morning and evening session for each of these three different workshops:

“Are You Ready to Do Business with Corporate America?” will teach minority businesses in Hawaii how to become certified as a Minority Business Enterprise.

“How to Navigate Corporate America: A Corporate Straight Talk Session.” The Walt Disney Company, Wyndham Worldwide and Johnson Controls, Inc. will explain why they seek MBEs to do business with.

“Doing Business with Disney & Johnson Controls, Inc.” will provide an opportunity for MBEs must be certified already that are interested in discussing current contract opportunities these corporations have in Hawaii – and on the mainland.

The mission of Latin Business Hawaii is to serve as a bridge that links Hawaii’s Hispanic business, professional, and managerial communities, with “mainstream” communities – in Hawaii, nationally and internationally -- in order to create and promote economic, social and cultural development.

"Hispanic community members, angered by Councilman Rod Tam's use of an ethnic slur during a meeting last month, will hold a rally at 3 p.m. Thursday outside Honolulu Hale calling for Tam's removal as chairman of a powerful committee.

Tam apologized for using the term "wetbacks," saying he had not known it was offensive when referring to undocumented workers from Mexico during a May 13 Zoning Committee meeting.

Hispanic Community Blasts Councilman For ‘Wetbacks’ Remark – Hawaii

"Key members of Hawaii's Hispanic community Wednesday blasted Councilman Rod Tam for using an ethnic slur.

Last month at a council meeting, Tam said he was worried about undocumented workers taking Hawaii jobs.

"They got to be skilled licensed workers. We don't want any wetbacks basically. We have been having contractors, developers bringing in wetbacks from New Mexico... from Mexico, I'm sorry," Tam said during the meeting."

Hawaii Hispanic News Returns In Time for Cinco De Mayo

The Hawaii Hispanic News, a free monthly newspaper, is being re-launched May 1, 2008 – just in time for Cinco De Mayo. It will fuse Hawaii content and advertising with local, national, and international, material about Hispanics.

The 16-page publication will address the unique needs and interests of Hawaii’s 100,000 Hispanic resident community. Its coverage will range from serious matters -- such as religion and immigration -- to lighter topics, such as entertainment and lifestyles.

The newspaper was originally published from 1994 – 1999, but publisher José Villa says: “We were ahead of our time. Corporate Hawaii had not realized the tremendous growth of the Hispanic community in Hawaii. Now, with 100,000 residents -- roughly 9% of the state’s population -- it’s a new ballgame and now Corporate Hawaii wants to play.”

Villa adds: “By distributing our newspaper free through the various venues our Hispanic community congregates in: Hispanic restaurants; Latin dances; churches; store fronts; universities; military bases; Hispanic organizations; private and public school Spanish clubs; etc. – it is now easy to reach Hawaii’s Hispanic community with just one buy.”

Hawaii’s highly-diverse Hispanic community extends from the more densely-populated areas of Honolulu, Waikiki, and Oahu’s major military base communities, to the less densely-populated areas in Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island.

Latino-Owned Grant Writing Firm Sets Up Shop In Honolulu

New Hispanic business association in Hawaii – Latin Business Association of Hawaii (LBAH)

Recent Census Bureau reports indicate there are about 104,000 Hispanics in Hawaii (8% of population). These Hispanics hail from, or are descendants of citizens of, 22 Spanish-speaking countries. And while there are successful Hispanic businesspeople and professionals in various industries in the islands, we lacked a professionally-run Hispanic business organization of mainstream quality. In response to that need, the Latin Business Association of Hawaii -- “LBAH” -- was recently created. The mission of LBAH is to: 1) promote and support the economic growth of Hawaii’s Hispanic businesses and individuals; and 2) to serve as a link between Hawaii Hispanic businesses and the global business community. LBAH is a pan-Hispanic organization created by “cultural cousins”: two Puerto Ricans, a Mexican and a Cuban. The organization is based on the well-known Spanish proverb “Hoy por ti, mañana por mi.” (“Today for you, tomorrow for me”). Each member has a different set of knowledge, resources and contacts. He/she agrees to share those to help the businesses of fellow members grow and succeed.
