Posted on: February 18th, 2012Yesterday MSNBC announced that it is parting ways with infamous racist, Pat Buchanan. MSNBC suspended Buchanan four months ago following the publication of his latest novel, in which Buchanan outwardly mourns “The End of White America” (indeed, this is the title of one of the chapters), and outright claims that children of color are bringing down the country’s test scores. The novel explicitly states that “the decline in academic test scores here at home and in international competition is likely to continue, as more and more of the children taking those tests will be African-American and Hispanic.”
“Pat Buchanan has no place in mainstream media,” NHMC’s President and CEO, Alex Nogales remarked. “NHMC applauds MSNBC for its corporate responsibility. This should be a lesson to all media company executives, programmers and shareholders, that hate speech doesn’t pay. It is a liability, not an asset.”
For a quarter century NHMC has been advocating for fair and accurate portrayals of Latinos in media, and pushing back against negative stereotypes and hate speech against Latinos and other people of color. NHMC was involved in the campaign to persuade CNN to drop Lou Dobbs and it also had discussions with NBC executives about Pat Buchanan.
In its most current campaign to Take John and Ken Off the Air, NHMC has mobilized dozens of community organizations to protest Clear Channel hate mongers John and Ken. Dozens of advertisers have dropped “The John and Ken Show.” This week, Clear Channel suspended John and Ken following another in a long line of their inflammatory comments, when they referred to the late Whitney Houston as a “crack ho.”
“If Clear Channel executives are smart, they will fire John and Ken immediately. CNN and MSNBC dropped their hate pundits and avoided having their brands affiliated with haters and racists. It’s time for Clear Channel to follow CNN and MSNBC’s lead, to show some corporate responsibility and to dismiss John and Ken once and for all. Trafficking in hate – although it may be profitable – will only hurt Clear Channel in the long run, and I am gravely concerned about what it says about their corporate culture,” Nogales added.
