In a night where 21 show-stopping performances highlighted the best in Latin music, the Univision Network celebrated musical excellence and innovation across genres, including pop, tropical, regional Mexican, rock alternative and urban at the 24th annual “Premio Lo Nuestro” 2012 Latin Music Awards. The broadcast, which aired LIVE from the AmericanAirlines Arena is the longest-running Latin music awards show in Spanish-language television history.
Shakira and Prince were the night’s biggest winners with four awards each and Mexican band Intocable won three awards.
“Premio Lo Nuestro” opened the night with a never before seen on Spanish television high-tech number by regaetton king Daddy Yankee performing his hit song “Lovumba.” To keep the momentum going, Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi wowed audiences with a disco-like worldwide debut of the classic hit “Gloria,” transforming the arena into a nightclub of epic proportions.
Then, regional Mexican singer Espinoza Paz romanced the audience with an intimate performance of his new single “Un Hombre Normal,” after the soundtrack’s extraordinary viral success. In one of the night’s most talked about moments, Venezuelan duo Chino y Nacho descended on stage with a spectacular entrance, giving way to their sexy cabaret-themed performance of “El Poeta.”
For the first time on television, Italian singer-songwriter Laura Pausini performed her new single “Jamas Abandone.” Also, one of the award show’s most nominated artists, Tito el Bambino, performed “Me Voy De La Casa.”
Other highlights included Mexican music star Gerardo Ortiz’s unplugged performance of “Amor Confuso” and singer Luis Fonsi’s high-impact worldwide premiere of Menudo’s original “Claridad,” accompanied by the “Premio Lo Nuestro” fan pit that jammed to an eclectic show of neon lights.
The show also featured some of Latin music’s most anticipated duets, including one of the night’s mega performances by Pitbull “Mr. Worldwide” and Chris Brown who delivered a blowout presentation of their hit “International Love” in an airport-like setting where cities around the world came to life on an oversized flight ticker, creating a destination that was simply out-of-this-world. Also, Paulina Rubio and Espinoza Paz presented a worldwide debut of “Me Voy” from the soundtrack of Univision’s hit novela “El Talisman.” In one of the night’s most memorable moments, the Latin “Queen of Rock” Alejandra Guzman rocked out to “Dia de Suerte” along with band Moderatto, in a whimsical performance that left the audience in awe before a sea of red flower petals.
Additional highlights include norteno band Intocable with the worldwide premiere of “Llueve” and the inimitable vocals of singer Shaila Durcal’s interpreting “Tanto Amor.” The romantic tone continued with bachata singer Romeo Santos, who presented the worldwide debut of “Mi Santa” on a candlelit stage surrounded by dancers swaying to the infectious sound of flamenco guitarist Rayito.
“Premio Lo Nuestro” Excellence Award recipient Pepe Aguilar also delighted the audience with a special medley presentation of pop, banda and mariachi.
Other hot musical performances included Mexican band Reik’s “Tu Mirada,” a groovy version of “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Sie7e, the television premiere of regional Mexican singer Larry Hernandez’s new single “Ya Me Canse” and Elvis Crespo delivered contagious beats with “Vallenato en Karaoke.”
Prince Royce also rocked the house with the worldwide premiere of “Las Cosas Pequenas,” while Europe’s hottest DJ Juan Magan brought the house down with “Bailando Por El Mundo,” along with Pitbull “Mr. Worldwide” and El Cata, bringing the bustling streets of Madrid to life before the audience in an unforgettable party.
In one of the most emotional moments, international star Enrique Iglesias honored beloved television personality and legend Mario Kreutzberger “Don Francisco,” with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his 50-year career and remarkable trajectory in the entertainment industry.
“Premio Lo Nuestro” 2012 was hosted by Mexican beauty Jacqueline Bracamontes and novela leading man Eduardo Santamarina. The awards were preceded by a glamorous red carpet arrivals pre-show “Noche de Estrellas,” hosted by Univision personalities Barbara Bermudo (“Primer Impacto”) and Giselle Blondet (“Nuestra Belleza Latina”), with commentary from style guru and “Sal y Pimienta” (“Salt and Pepper”) host Rodner Figueroa.
