Press Release:

During a panel at the Arizona’s Emerging Latino Vote, an event held in Phoenix College aimed at empowering the Latino community in civic engagement, undocumented youth participated in order to address the issue of how important the DREAM Act is to the Latino electorate. The panel included state Democratic and Republican party representatives to understand the different perspectives between both parties.

Dulce Matuz, a DREAM eligible young lady asked “when is the republican party going to stand up for family values?” referring to the Republican pro family stance and their continuing anti-immigrant “deport them all” or “self-deportation” approach, which has been endorsed by presidential republican candidate Mitt Romney.

Jose Borrajero, communications director for the Arizona Latino Republican Association replied that “[immigrant] families can be together, they just don’t necessarily have to be here”, prompting immediate, dissatisfied moans from the audience.

This is the sort of hard-line, anti-immigrant family approach which is failing to win over Latinos, even as the Obama administration sets the record for deportations.  The Republican Party is further alienating itself by coming out with policies which are anti-immigrant, and surprisingly anti-family.  With both immigrant and family issues very much driving the Latino community in the United States, Latino voters are a target that is awkwardly missed by a largely anti-immigrant, increasingly right-leaning Republican party.
