Gerardo Ortiz garners the most honors with six Billboard Mexican Music Awards

MIAMI — October 20, 2011 – The biggest stars of Mexican music shined at the 2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm®. The inaugural event honored the top albums, songs, most popular singers, publishers and record labels of regional Mexican music according to Billboard chart performance. Top honors at the prestigious Mexican music event went to Corrido and Norteña music phenomenon Gerardo Ortiz who received six Billboard Mexican Music Awards. The majestic and lively event took place at The Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, California and will broadcast on Telemundo October 27 at 7pm/6c. Gerardo Ortiz, known as the new king of corridos and a newcomer phenomenon in this music genre, was the evening’s most awarded artist with six Billboard Mexican Music Awards in multiple categories including the prestigious Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Albums Artist of the Year and Norteño Artist of the Year. Gerardo Ortiz also won, in collaboration with Calibre 50, the Vocal Event Song of the Year award for “Calibre 50 Featuring Gerardo Ortiz ‘Culiacan Vs. Mazatlan.’”

Artists who received two Billboard Mexican Music Awards included: Corrido music sensation Larry Hernandez who was honored as Songs Artist of the Year and took the trophy for Norteño Song of the Year with “Arrastrando Las Patas”; the Mexican vernacular music icon Vicente Fernandez garnered awards for Ranchero/Mariachi Album of the Year for the album “El Hombre Que Mas Te Amo” and Ranchero/Mariachi Artist of the Year; Sinaloan band Julion Alvarez y Su Norteño Banda won Song of the Year and Banda Song of the Year, both awards for “Ni Lo Intentes”; the album “35 Aniversario” by the legendary band Los Bukis was awarded Album of the Year and Duranguense/Grupero Album of the Year.

During the 2011 Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm® three special awards were handed out to leading singers and musical acts that have made an impact on Mexican music over the span of their careers. Los Tucanes de Tijuana was awarded the “Premio Legado Musical,” in recognition of a lengthy and rich musical trajectory that has influenced the genre and its artists. The power of Los Tucanes de Tijuana on the international scene is like no other. Their music, innovative corridos immortalized in literature, and their leadership has defined them as icons in their genre. Jenni Rivera, an icon for women of her generation – with accomplishments as an entrepreneur, producer, television star, social activist and celebrity received “El Premio de la Estrella;” a special award that recognizes the achievements of a musical artist beyond the realm of the performance. Rivera was also honored with the award for Female Artist of the Year. Paquita la del Barrio was the recipient of Billboard’s inaugural “La Voz” (The Voice) award, given to an artist with a distinctive and unique on and off-stage persona. Paquita la del Barrio is an iconoclast with a powerful voice, a singular repertoire that no one else has dared to imitate and a unique and immediately recognizable presence.

La Arrolladora Banda El Limón was recognized with the Airplay Artist of the Year award and earned Telemundo’s “Premio Tu Mundo” (Your World Award), awarded by fans who cast their votes for their favorite finalist through on-line voting. While the recipients of the Billboard Mexican Music Awards were determined by data as listed on Billboard’s weekly charts, the “Premio Tu Mundo” winner was decided solely by fans’ votes compiled on the website Telemundo.com/PremiosBillboard.

The partial list of winners of one Billboard Mexican Music Award include: Espinoza Paz for Banda Artist of the Year, Intocable for Duo/Group Artist of the Year, El Trono de Mexico for Duranguense/Grupero Artist of the Year, Grupo Montez de Durango for Duranguense/Grupero Song of the Year with “Mi Necesidad,” Pedro Fernandez for Ranchero/Mariachi Song of the Year with “Amarte A La Antigua,” Los Inquietos del Norte for Norteno Album of the Year with “Vamos A Darle Con Todo: Coleccion De Corridos,” and the late Selena as the Digital Download Artist of the Year; among other singers, groups and composers. The Billboard Mexican Music Awards presented by State Farm will be broadcast in the U.S. on Thursday, October 27, at 7pm/6c. on Telemundo, and will be also be seen in more than 18 Spanish speaking countries throughout the world.
