NHLA MOURNS PASSING OF LABOR AND HISPANIC COMMUNITY LEADER RICHARD CHAVEZ

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of the 30 leading Hispanic organizations in the United States, today issued a statement mourning the death of Richard E. Chavez. Lillian Rodriguez-Lopez, Chair of NHLA, issued this statement.
“Today we pause for a moment to recognize the lifelong dedication and sacrifice of one our nation’s greatest advocates for workers rights and Latinos. Richard Chavez dedicated his life to securing social justice for farm laborers. He helped his brother, Cesar Chavez, build the United Farm Workers into a political force.  He worked to preserve his brother’s legacy in California, and continued the movement to secure justice for migrant workers throughout his life.
“NHLA extends its deepest sympathy to Chavez’s children and his longtime partner Dolores Huerta. The Latino community has lost a great leader, but his life was an inspiration to all of us who seek greater equality for every American. His work will continue to inspire and move generations to achieve justice and equality for all workers and disadvantaged communities.”
