Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Each year on May fifth, we celebrate a historic day of great significance. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the anniversary of the Mexican Army’s defeat of the French under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza in 1862. That unlikely victory at the Battle of Puebla represents Mexican courage in the face of considerable challenges, and remains a point of pride today.
Although the roots of this observance are in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is also widely celebrated in Mexican-American communities–providing an opportunity for people on both sides of the border to explore our rich history, culture and heritage. As Latino influence has grown in the U.S., many have embraced the celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which has evolved into a general day of celebration. Unfortunately, not all that celebrate have a true understanding of the meaning behind the day’s significance, or its broad regional impact. Specifically, the Battle of Puebla stopped the French from sending supplies to the Confederate forces during the Civil War, a significant moment in U.S. history as well.
In an effort to highlight the proud history behind our annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, the AOL Latino homepage will feature unique and exclusive interviews with literary giant Carlos Fuentes through Friday. While at our site, visitors can read personal stories about what Cinco de Mayo means to Latinos today and even test their knowledge around the origin and importance of Cinco de Mayo through a short, interactive quiz. Additionally, on our hub, you can find recipes, decoration tips and advice for Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and more. These Cinco de Mayo features can be accessed from AOL.com as well.
We hope these features provide a fun and unique way to celebrate and explore this important part of our history. As the U.S. Latino population continues to grow, at AOL Latino we feel it is important that our rich culture and strong traditions and values remain at the forefront of our community. Remembering and sharing the importance of historic events like Cinco de Mayo, is just one way that we can do that.
