Hi Tomas, I just posted a comment on the article to which this headline links. I am curious about La Raza (And I know this is used in many contexts) but I really was never curious about la Raza until I found myself feeling defensive to comments posted by a conservative friend on fb. I am wondering about the content of the courses called La Raza that conservative folks in AZ seem to be worried about. Do these courses encourage illegal behavior, treason (a take-over of US by Mexico for example) or racism against other groups that are not Latino? Or ?? What are these conservative people worried about? I am curious because I have a hard time finding information which refutes the claims that are made by conservatives who are afraid of anything called la raza.

Not having taken the courses or reviewed the coursework, I can’t for sure say what the problem is. Having read a bunch of articles on the subject is different than being on the ground, of course. I have been charged with similar ulterior motives. How dare I organize Latino news! It is racist. It is revolutionary! OMG! The world is going to explode! The courses as far as I know do not promote any illegal behavior, treason or racism but I do believe they present history from a different perspective much like an American Indian’s version of US history is quite different from the settler’s. Folk both conservative and liberal worry about change, fear of the unknown, fear of difference. imho
