The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund announced the election Mike Fernandez and Uvaldo Herrera to its Board of Directors for a three-year term. Messrs. Fernández and Herrera were elected at the organization’s Board of Directors meeting November 19 in Washington, D.C., during the 8th Biennial NALEO National Institute for Newly Elected Officials.

Mike Fernández is Corporate Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Cargill, an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services. Prior to joining Cargill, Mr. Fernández was Vice President of Public Affairs at State Farm. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, holding both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Uvaldo Herrera is a Staff Director at State Farm Insurance Company, holding a variety of positions during his nearly three-decade career with the company. His current focus is developing business growth strategies and tactics for the Hispanic market. He has also served in a variety of positions with the Hispanic National Bar Association, including Vice President of Programs and General Counsel. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the DePaul University College of Law.

“As a former Capitol Hill staffer and former city councilman and school board member (Rochester, N.Y.), I am both honored and thrilled to serve on the Board,” said Mr. Fernández.

“I consider it a great privilege to be joining the Board and to work on the issues that will forge a stronger future for our nation and communities,” added Mr. Herrera.

“We extend a warm welcome to our new Board members and look forward to working with them and with our members across the country. These Board members understand the significance of the growing impact Hispanics have on elections and will contribute greatly to expanding the NALEO Educational Fund’s role in our community,” said Board Chairman Juan Zapata.

The NALEO Educational Fund also elected Florida State Senator Anitere Flores and New Mexico State Auditor Héctor Balderas to a second three-year term.

“We would like to thank outgoing Board members Art Ruiz and Cindy Matus Morriss for their tireless service, and are confident they will continue to be active members of the NALEO Educational Fund community,” continued Zapata.
