The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), which represents the nation’s 30 leading Latino organizations, today lauded President Barack Obama who called on Congress to pass the DREAM Act before the end of the year.  His comments align him with Democratic and Republican Hispanic Members of Congress.

“We welcome President Obama’s commitment to work with Hispanic leaders in Congress to pass the DREAM Act which has a history of bipartisan support dating back to 2001 when it was first introduced by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Richard Durbin (D-IL). We must act now on that bipartisan support and finally pass this critical legislation before the end of the year,” said Lillian Rodriguez-López, Chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda.  “For thousands of Americans who have contributed so much to our society—through serving our country in the military or through rigorous pursuit of a college degree—the DREAM Act is a way to earn the true dream of citizenship.  It is long past time that Congress took action on comprehensive immigration reform and passing the DREAM Act this year would be a great first step.”

Following an Oval Office meeting yesterday with leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the President reiterated his support for comprehensive immigration reform and asked Congress to pass the DREAM Act before it adjourns for the year.  In September, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus announced its support for passage of the DREAM Act this year and U.S. Representative Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) recently added his support.  The DREAM Act would allow the children of undocumented immigrants to earn citizenship through military service or academic achievement.

Established in 1991, The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) brings together Hispanic leaders to establish policy priorities that address, and raise public awareness of the major issues affecting the Latino community and the nation as a whole.
