Focus on Child Abuse The Mental Health Program conducted a small focus group of seven Latina women between  the ages of 26 and 61, all of whom have children and live in Wilmington.  Answers to the question What is Child Abuse? included:  Forcing or expecting children to do something they are not old enough to do. Leaving children dirty and without food. Hitting with sticks or belts. Pulling hair.  Responses to What have you observed in the Wilmington Community? included: Families with too many children to feed and clothe them correctly. Traditional values that say you must hit children to make them polite. Parents who don’t know any other way. Teachers or community members being verbally abusive or harsh with children. Women victims of domestic violence who cannot protect their children. Frustrated parents who hit because they are depressed or have substance abuse issues.  Answers to What are obstacles to families finding help? included: Fear of losing their children, of criminal charges and/or of immigration consequences.  Families are used to living that way and don’t see a problem. They think they are doing the right thing. No economic resources to pay for services and/or no transportation to get to services. The women identified services needed, including:  Education about child abuse, child development and alternatives to corporal punishment. Therapy to reduce stress. Home-based services. More resources for parents, i.e. safe daycare, shelters, jobs, etc. Contact: mdiangelo@thelatincenter.org
