The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the nation’s leading organization for encouraging and nurturing Hispanics in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions, hosted its 33rd Annual National Conference last week in Cincinnati.

The Conference, which is the largest of its kind in the country, brought together more than 4,000 Hispanic students, teachers and engineering professionals, as well as corporate and government recruiters to find ways to teach and encourage more Hispanics to pursue education and careers in the engineering and technical professions.

At the closing gala banquet, SHPE bestowed its annual STAR Awards at the National Conference to outstanding professionals and students, honoring their professional achievement and service to the community and SHPE. The awards were as follows:

* The Company Achievement Award – Procter & Gamble
* The Corporate Achievement Award – Antonio Miguelez, director of Research and Engineering Group at the Naval Air Welfare Center Aircraft Division
* The Jaime Oaxaca Award – Renato Recio, distinguished engineer and networking chief technology officer at IBM Data Center
* The Junipero Serra Award – Jaime Lopez, senior staff engineer at Technology Marketing at Chevron Products Co.
* The Student Role Model Award – Joel Mendoza, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago
* The Professional Role Model Award – Leony Rosa, wireless test engineer for Northrup Grumman Information Systems
* The Honorary Member Award – Erica Reynosa, senior systems engineer at Lockheed Martin
* Hispanics in Technology Corporate Award – Alfredo Macias, software engineer in the Information Systems and Global Solutions Department at Lockheed Martin
* The Hispanics in Technology Government Award – Enid Sanchez-Bubb, deputy program manager at Naval Air Systems Command
* The Promising Engineer Award – Carlos Castrejon Jr., refinery process engineer at Chevron Corp.

“Hispanics are projected to comprise 20 percent of the college enrollment in the coming years, and it’s critically important for our nation’s future that the best and brightest of those students are encouraged to pursue careers in the engineering and technical professions,” says, Pilar Montoya, CEO of SHPE.

There are today over 300 SHPE chapters and more than 10,000 SHPE members nationwide.
