On Tuesday, September 28, Bienestar Human Services, Inc. (BIENESTAR) honored Los Angeles City Councilmember Bernard C. Parks for his contributions to the Latino community at a reception at its South Los Angeles Center.   Community leaders, members and activists gathered in a packed room to honor Councilmember Parks, and count down to NLAAD, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, which is Oct. 15.

“Over the past decade, the City has partnered with BIENESTAR to provide crucial HIV prevention services to some of the most highly-impacted communities in Los Angeles, such as the Eighth District,” Councilmember Bernard C. Parks said.  “I was thrilled to tour BIENESTAR’s South Los Angeles facility and see first-hand the invaluable outreach and education they provide to the Latino and African American communities.”

“NLAAD, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day speaks to the critical role HIV testing, prevention and education plays in the Latino community where late testing is an all too common reality.  We are proud to honor Councilmember Parks who understand this growing crisis and has exemplified the kind of leadership we need,” said Robert Contreras, BIENESTAR’s interim Executive Director.

For over two decades, BIENESTAR has advocated for equal rights and the health and well-being of Latinos in the Southern California area, particularly for those within the LGBT community.  BIENESTAR operates HIV/AIDS prevention, education, case management, needle exchange, testing and counseling, social and legal services, and housing assistance, serving more than 10,000 clients per year, from nine community centers located throughout Southern California.

Since 1989, BIENESTAR has been committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the Latino community and other underserved communities in Southern California. We accomplish this through our unique peer-to peer service model, community outreach, health education and awareness and human rights advocacy for social justice. We operate ten centers throughout Southern California and reach over 10,000 people yearly.
