Leaders from Capitol Hill, national Hispanic leadership organizations, corporate sponsors and the educational community were on hand, along with SHPE student members who have benefited from SHPE programs. Additionally, a videotaped message from Procter & Gamble CEO Bob McDonald was played. Procter & Gamble is a major sponsor of SHPE and its National Conference.
The Annual SHPE National Conference is one of the largest gatherings of its kind, bringing together more than 5,000 Hispanic students and educators, as well as more than 300 corporate, industry and government recruiters and sponsors.
This year’s convention will be the 33rd Annual SHPE National Conference, and it will be held at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati Oct. 27-31, 2010.
“Hispanics are projected to comprise 20 percent of the college enrollment in the coming years, and it’s critically important for our nation’s future that the best and brightest of those students are encouraged to pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering and math professions,” says, Pilar Montoya, CEO of SHPE.
Through local and regional chapters nationwide, SHPE reaches out to students K-12, as well as at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with science fairs and camps, scholarships, mentoring programs, training, and other grassroots efforts to attract Hispanics into the STEM professions. Today SHPE is one of the leading sources of Hispanic STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) talent in the country.
The SHPE National Conference will not only provide educational workshops for students, it will also offer a career fair where corporations and government can interview and meet with the students.
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is the leading Hispanic social-technical organization in the United States with a primary function to enhance the potential of Hispanics in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. There are today over 300 SHPE chapters and more than 10,000 SHPE members nationwide.
