Pan American Bank (Los Angeles) and the Rotary Club of East Los Angeles today announced that acclaimed Chicano Studies Professor Chon A. Noriega will address the Rotary Club of East Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 13, 2010.

Chon A. Noriega is a professor in the UCLA Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media. He is the author of Shot in America: Television, the State, and the Rise of Chicano Cinema (Minnesota, 2000) and editor of nine books dealing with Latino media, performance and visual art. Since 1996, he has been editor of Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies, the flagship journal for the field since its founding in 1970. In July 2002, he became Director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center.

“We are thrilled to have Professor Noriega address the Rotary Club of East Los Angeles. So much of Dr. Noriega’s work has focused on communities such as East Los Angeles,” said Pan American Bank CEO Jesse Torres. “As a Chicano and a UCLA graduate, I have tremendous respect for the work of Dr. Noriega. We are very fortunate to have him join us. His work in the areas of Latino media and the arts has brought much deserved attention on the efforts of Chicanos. This is particularly relevant in Los Angeles, the center of the media universe and the Chicano stronghold.”

In addition to his work in media, Professor Noriega has curated numerous arts projects, including the current traveling exhibition Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement, which opened in New York City in March 2010. He has also helped recover and preserve independent films and video art, including the first three Chicano-directed feature films. The restoration of these films is the cornerstone of an ongoing “Chicano Cinema Recovery Project” that he organized between the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Chicano Studies Research Center, with major support from the Ford, Rockefeller and Ahmanson Foundations. In May 2009, Noriega curated and co-hosted a month-long festival on “Latino Images in Film” on Turner Classic Movies.
