Tagged: Arturo Vargas, Felipe Calderón, White HouseArturo Vargas, Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, joined a select group of Latino leaders at the White House and U.S. Capitol to welcome Mexican President Felipe Calderón and First Lady Margarita Zavala to the nation’s capital.
This is the first Obama administration State Visit hosted for Mexico’s First Couple.
“It was an honor to be invited to the White House State Dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderón and First Lady Margarita Zavala, and to attend his speech before a joint session of Congress,” said Vargas. “President Calderón reiterated the important relationship between both countries, and the critical role immigrants play in the future success of the United States. He brought the message that Mexico and the United States have to work together to defeat the politics of hate if we want to truly progress as nations in the global community.”
Vargas also attended a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol honoring the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who posthumously received the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest civilian honor granted to a foreign citizen. Kennedy was recognized for his tireless work in support of comprehensive immigration reform.
“Senator Kennedy was a wonderful friend of the Latino community and we miss him greatly,” said Vargas. “It is very fitting that his work and legacy should be remembered in this way.”
