AIDSVu is an online tool that allows users to visually explore the HIV/AIDS epidemic alongside additional information such as HIV and STD testing center locations and news coverage of HIV/AIDS. Additionally, the site allows users to “make the pledge” to get tested. The goal of the pledge is to normalize the act of and discussion about getting tested via social networking sites.
This is a project at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, led by Patrick Sullivan, PhD, DVM. Dr. Sullivan has worked in HIV/AIDS surveillance for 12 years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including 5 years as a Branch Chief overseeing HIV/AIDS surveillance activities.
AIDSVu will be updated on an ongoing basis with new data and additional information as it becomes available. The project’s long term goal is to combine HIV/AIDS data at the county level with messages to encourage testing. A comprehensive map with the data is tentatively set to be made public in February of 2011. An advisory committee comprising major stakeholders is being gathered to provide oversight and guidance for the ongoing project. Funding for AIDSVu is provided by Gilead Sciences, Inc.
This resource is intended for use by the general public, researchers, government officials, healthcare providers and advocates, among others.
