Media Advisory on ESOL Resolutions in Florida
Tagged: english language learners, ESOL, Florida, Hispanic ChamberThe Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (FSHCC) has adopted an ESOL Resolution supporting ESOL students and the LULAC Consent Decree’s requirements for teacher preparation. The FSHCC has 24 affiliates, located in Northeast, Northwest, Central, Southwest, and South Florida areas of the state. The efforts of LULAC Florida State Deputy Director Albert Collazo in gaining sponsorship of the resolution and of the board members of the FSHCC for voting for its adoption are appreciated.
This is an important accomplishment as the voice of the business community is influential in shaping the course of legislative events. Coupled with the resolutions adopted by cities and counties, this combined set of statements sends a strong statewide message of support for teacher training leading to quality education for English Language Learners.
We now have ESOL resolutions from two chambers (The Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and The Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of North East Florida), two county commissions (the Miami -Dade and Broward County Commissions), nine cities in three counties (the cities of Aventura, Doral, Homestead, Mascotte, Miami Beach, North Miami Beach, North Miami, Pembroke Pines, and South Miami,) and the Miami-Dade League of Cities, representing all 34 municipalities in Miami-Dade County.
Thanks are also due to all the local elected officials who sponsored ESOL resolutions:
Commissioners
Rebeca Sosa, Miami-Dade County Commission,
Diana Wasserman-Shultz, Broward County Commission,
Luz Urbaez Weinberg, City of Aventura,
Angelo Castillo, City of Pembroke Pines, who sponsored the first of these resolutions;
Councilpersons
Frantz Pierre, City of North Miami Beach,
Nazy Ramallo-Sierra, City of Homestead;
Mayors
Mati Bowers, City of Miami Beach,
Juan Carlos Bermudez, City of Doral,
Felix Ramirez, City of Mascotte,
Horace Feliu, who sponsored resolutions for both the City of South Miami and for the Board of the Miami-Dade League of Cities; and
City Clerk
Alez Deslume, City of North Miami.
The support of local elected officials’ sponsorship of these resolutions and their colleagues’ unanimous votes in support are appreciated.
