The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) issued the following statement regarding the swearing-in of John A. Pérez as California’s newest Assembly Speaker.
“We congratulate Assemblymember Pérez on his new position. His elevation truly represents the progress Latinos are making in state government in the nation’s most populous state, as he is the fourth Latino in the last 13 years to become Assembly Speaker.
“NALEO looks forward to working with Speaker Pérez in helping the state recover from its current economic challenges, and to ensure that California’s Latinos have every opportunity to succeed and thrive.”
Pérez is a first-term legislator representing portions of downtown Los Angeles and East Los Angeles. He is the state’s first openly gay Assembly speaker.
