Jairo Alvarez’s ‘NO SUCH THING AS IMPOSSIBLE’ Chosen as French High School Text
Tagged: book, Colombian“NO SUCH THING AS IMPOSSIBLE – From Adversity to Triumph,” Jairo Alvarez’s award-winning memoirs, has been chosen as a 2010 textbook for Spanish studies at the Institute Lycee Notre Dame du Roc in La Roche Sur Yon, France.
In “NO SUCH THING AS IMPOSSIBLE,” Alvarez tells his dramatic journey from humble beginnings in Colombia to become a successful homebuilder and contractor in the United States.
One of 11 children, Alvarez rose from a small farming community to the Colombian Army’s elite Presidential Guard, fighting guerillas in the South American jungle. His decision to immigrate to the United States in the early 1960s meant giving up his military career at the age of 25 and facing what would be countless setbacks and challenges.
At age 72, Alvarez is a survivor of prostate cancer, a gold medal Senior Olympian, artist and philanthropist.
Released in 2007, “NO SUCH THING AS IMPOSSIBLE” has won numerous awards and was considered for a 2009 Pulitzer Prize.
“Notre Dame du Roc chose my book not only on its Spanish-language merits but as an example of persevering life’s challenges,” said Alvarez. “Of all the honors for NO SUCH THING AS IMPOSSIBLE, the chance to inspire young people is among the highest.”
