NALEO Commends Justice Eva Guzman on Her Historic Nomination to the Texas Supreme Court

“The National Association of Latino Elected Officials commends Justice Eva Guzman as she celebrated her formal investiture as the first Hispanic woman to sit at the Texas Supreme Court in Austin. The ceremony took place at the Texas House of Representatives in the Capitol building. Justice Guzman was appointed to the State’s highest court by Governor Rick Perry October 8, 2009.

“This is a historic day for Latinos in Texas. The appointment of Justice Guzman recognizes a most distinguished member of our judicial system,” said NALEO President and Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia. “I am excited to see another Latina earn a top position in public office,” she added.

Previously, Judge Eva Guzman had been a justice on Houston’s 14th Court of Appeals, appointed by President George W. Bush, and was a Harris County district judge before that. Throughout her career, Judge Eva Guzman has presided over thousands of civil and criminal cases and authored hundreds of published opinions. She has received numerous awards for her judicial contributions. Most recently she was named “Latina Judge of the Year” by the National Hispanic Bar Association, and “2009 Judge of the Year” by the Mexican American Bar Association. Her nomination is another example of the leadership and public service Latinos are providing in all branches of our government.
