The Puerto Rican hip-hop duo went 5-for-5 at the 10th Latin Grammy Awards…Along with their second straight win for Best Urban Music Album, Calle 13’s René “Residente” Joglar and Eduardo “Visitante” Cabra picked up golden gramophones for Album of the Year, for Los De Atrás Vienen Conmigo, Record of the Year, Best Alternative Song and Best Short Form Music Video… Calle 13 also brought the house down with salsa star Rubén Blades on their hit song “La Perla,” backed by performers from Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère.” – E!

Calle 13 dominates Latin Grammy Awards: Puerto Rican alt-hip-hop duo Calle 13 swept all of its nominated categories at the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. The act went five-for-five at the awards… and took home trophies for record and album of the year, winning the top prize for its politically charged third offering, “Los De Atrás Vienen Conmigo.” Accepting the record of the year trophy for “No Hay Nadie Como Tú,” René Pérez, who raps as Residente, said from the stage, “This award, I have to dedicate to many people.” He singled out socially conscious Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa, who died in October…. The duo also took home best urban music album; best short-form music video for “La Perla,” featuring Panamanian salsa singer Ruben Blades; and best alternative song for “No Hay Nadie Como Tú,” a collaboration with Mexico City rockers Cafe Tacuba. The night brings their Latin Grammy total to 10; they’re also one-time Grammy award winners… the show clearly belonged to Calle 13. The pair — who have emerged as a musical force over the course of three albums by blending politics, social issues and satire with an eclectic mix of hip-hop, samba, cumbia and other Latin American styles — performed “La Perla” alongside Blades on the telecast.”- Los Angeles Times
“Calle 13 has brought political critiques, raunchy fantasies and globe-hopping musical eclecticism to the Latin hip-hop style called reggaetón. It received the most nominations for this year’s awards, in five of the 49 award categories, with its album, “Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo” (“Those Behind Are Coming With Me”), and won them all, including Album of the Year. Calle 13’s single “No Hay Nadie Como Tú” (“There’s No One Like You”), which was written and performed with the Mexican rock group Café Tacvba, was named Record of the Year, the award for a single, as well as Best Alternative Song. Calle 13 also won awards for Best Urban Album and Best Short Music Video. The video was “La Perla,” a song about growing up in a poor neighborhood in San Juan, which Calle 13 performed with the Panamanian songwriter Rubén Blades.” –New York Times
“Lucky 13: Calle 13 took home an award in every category it was nominated in last night at the Latin Grammy Awards. Calle 13 won five Latin Grammys…” – Wall Street Journal
“Only a few minutes into the Latin Grammys awards show, Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 already led the competition… The reggaeton group snapped up both best urban album for the politically charged Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo and best alternative song, for No Hay Nadie Como Tu, their lyrically complex collaboration with Mexico City rockers Cafe Tacvba. The half brothers, Rene Perez, who is known as “Residente,” and Eduardo Cabra, or “Visitante,” posed for cameras on the carpet with their mother and Panamanian salsa legend Ruben Blades, who collaborated with them on La Perla, an ode to a seaside slum in San Juan.
While women in sequined gowns rubbed shoulders with Mexican regional groups in identical suits and cowboy hats on the carpet, Residente ran past the bleachers high-fiving the fans and signed autographs… Later, during the live telecast, the outspoken rapper dedicated the Latin Grammy for record of the year to government workers who lost their jobs in Puerto Rico.” – USA Today/AP

“Calle 13 high-fives the Latin Grammys… Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 — whose sound is a searing blend of hip-hop, reggaeton and tropical rhythms — took home all five awards it was nominated for, including album, urban album, record, alternative song and short-form music video of the year. “Calle 13 won five Latin Grammy awards on Thursday, including the coveted Album of the Year, helping cement their reputation as being among the vanguard of alternative reggaeton music. Singer Rene Perez, who calls himself “Residente”, thanked his mother onstage, paid tribute to late Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, and stayed true to his political songs such as “La Perla” by criticizing the Puerto Rican government… Perez had audiences applauding after singing the hit “La Perla” — a homage to Latin America’s poor neighborhoods called barrios and favelas — with Panamanian salsa star Ruben Blades. As the pair sang, dancers from Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas show “Mystere” swirled around them.” – Reuters
