Zack, the first Hispanic-American president-elect of the American Bar Association (ABA), has been selected by Hispanic Business magazine as one of its 2009 Top 100 Influentials.
The Top 100 Influentials represents a distinguished collection of accomplished Hispanic-American leaders from various fields, including elected officials, thought leaders, business executives, educators, CEOs, journalists, attorneys and judges. Joining Zack on this prestigious list is U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Others include NASA Astronaut Joseph Acaba, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Vice-President of Goldman-Sachs & Company, Robert Abreu.
“It is a privilege to be recognized among so many influential Hispanic leaders,” said Zack. “These individuals are providing rich and varied contributions to our nation. This is not just a celebration of Hispanics, it is a celebration of America and the opportunities this country provides to all.”
Zack, an administrative partner in BS&F’s Miami office, has practiced law for over 35 years with a focus on complex commercial litigation. Among his notable list of clients are Florida’s former Governor and U.S. Senator, Bob Graham as Special Counsel; the Florida Senate; and the Florida Department of Professional Regulation. In 2000, he joined BS&F chairman David Boies in representing former Vice President Al Gore in the trial of Bush v. Gore.
Zack’s ABA presidency, beginning August 2010, will be defined by a focus on the legal rights and education of Hispanics and other minorities, promoting civics education in America’s youth and addressing the high cost of continuing legal education in order to cultivate the next generation of lawyers. Increased access to the justice system for the poor and minorities is also a stated area of importance for Zack.
The son of a Cuban mother and American father, Zack immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba when he was 13 years old and grew up in Miami, Fl. “Coming from a place where the rights of his family, friends and neighbors were taken away, Steve brings an unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans,” said Boies. “This commitment will define Steve’s capable and inspired leadership of the ABA.”
Zack is a former chair of the ABA Latin American Council and also a founding member of the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA), and a life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, which promotes justice through research on the law and its impact on society.
