“Anoche algunos de mis colegas de America’s Voice asistieron a la presentación especial de un segmento de la serie de CNN “Latinos in America”. Hemos estado aguardando para ver cómo el tan publicitado especial maneja o incorpora dentro de su serie a una de las mayores amenazas que enfrentan los latinos en Estados Unidos: su presentador Lou Dobbs.
Pero anoche, un ejecutivo de CNN, Mark Nelson, señaló que la serie no hace mención del papel de los medios en general ni de su cadena en particular, en propagar mitos en torno a los latinos. Aparentemente sugirió que una de las formas para cambiar los puntos de vista en torno a los latinos es tener más Evas Longoria.
CNN ya debe saber que Dobbs es visto como una fuerza que le dificulta la vida a la comunidad latina. Hace sólo dos semanas, Democracia Ahora presentó un sondeo titulado “Líderes Latinos y sus opiniones sobre Lou Dobbs, de CNN”. Un 90% de los líderes latinos entrevistados creen que Dobbs dificulta ser latino en Estados Unidos.
America’s Voice junto a Media Matters, NDN y Presente.org le ha solicitado a CNN que saque a Dobbs de su espacio televisivo. El caso contra Dobbs es bastante convincente. Mi colega Adam Luna escribió sobre el trasfondo anti inmigrante de Dobbs en un artículo publicado en el Huffington Post:
Pocos individuos han hecho tanto para traer un lenguaje extremista y mensajes de odio a los medios tradicionales como ha hecho Dobbs. La cadena que se jacta de ser “el nombre más confiable en las noticias” transmite su lenguaje incendiario todos los días de la semana laboral, a la hora de mayor audiencia, mezclado entre los programas de periodistas tradicionales como Anderson Cooper, John King, Wolf Blitzer y Dana Bash.
Vea un par de episodios y lo escuchará usar el término “inmigrantes ilegales criminales” con el mismo desdén y la frecuencia con que los políticos sureños de mediados del siglo pasado empleaban el peyorativo (en inglés “the N word”) con que se describía a los afroamericanos. En el mundo de Dobbs los inmigrantes son criminales plagados de enfermedades que matan policías y que están fraguando una revolución. Los falsos reclamos de que los inmigrantes son los culpables de traer una nueva oleada de lepra a Estados Unidos se toman con pinzas si provienen de una cadena como Fox, pero si se dice en CNN, entonces es noticia.
Y cuando se trata de hablar del controvertido tema de la reforma migratoria, Dobbs no es un comentarista cualquiera. Lea esta conclusión de un estudio que condujo el Proyecto sobre la Excelencia Periodística del Pew Research Center, titulado “Cobertura Noticiosa del Tema Migratorio en el 2007”:
La agenda noticiosa de la televisión por cable depende hasta cierto grado no sólo del canal sino del presentador del programa. Entre todos los locutores de la televisión por cable, el que claramente se avocó al tema migratorio fue Los Dobbs, de CNN. Aunque durante todo el año el tema migratorio fue la historia número uno en 22% de las oportunidades, durante el debate migratorio se disparó a 43% del tiempo en que se analizó el programa de Dobbs…quien se refirió a la medida como una amnistía para indocumentados, enfatizó el costo que tendría para los contribuyentes, y la necesidad de contar con mayor seguridad fronteriza, algo que según Dobbs no se contemplaba en la medida. Criticó a George Bush, Ted Kennedy, Michael Chertoff, Lindsey Graham, Trent Lott y sus posturas sobre el tema migratorio. La noche en que el proyecto fue derrotado, Dobbs inició su programa con estas palabras: “Esta noche la aplastante derrota del presidente Bush y del liderazgo demócrata del Senado en torno a la amnistía es una gloriosa victoria para los estadounidenses”.
“La gloriosa victoria” para Dobbs, fue una devastadora derrota para muchas familias latinas, en especial las secuelas de la derrota, cuando la administración Bush, en su intento de apaciguar a los nativistas que Dobbs agita a diario, intensificó la aplicación de leyes migratorias al punto de que ahora las familias, muchas de ellas integradas por personas con diversas situaciones migratorias, viven con el temor diario de ser detenidas, interrogadas, arrestadas y permanentemente separadas.
De manera que si se toma en cuenta el papel que Dobbs ha tenido en satanizar a los inmigrantes latinos como criminales portadores de enfermedades, y en derrotar la reforma migratoria que habría beneficiado a millones de latinos en Estados Unidos, uno anticiparía que una serie presentada por Soledad O’Brien, una periodista profesional con una reputación de ser justa e íntegra, por lo menos hiciera referencia al líder nacional en atacar inmigrantes, ¿no es así?
Pero no. ¿Fue intencional? ¿Le ordenaron a O’Brien que evitara abordar este contencioso asunto interno para CNN? ¿Es la armonía en los pasillos de CNN más importante que la valentía periodística?
La realidad es que cuando de latinos en Estados Unidos se trata, Lou Dobbs es como el elefante en medio del salón. Pero si la serie “Latinos in America” puede considerarse creíble, ¿no debería abordar este asunto? ¿No es hora de que los periodistas serios de CNN defiendan la reputación de la cadena y sus propias reputaciones? ¿No es hora de que los periodistas se enfrenten a los ejecutivos que manchan la reputación de la que fuera una gran cadena cada vez que permiten que el programa de Lou Dobbs se transmita?
Todavía tienen tiempo. ¿Hay esperanzas? Lo sabremos cuando la serie se transmita el 22 de octubre”.
