Elected officials, labor leaders, Latino groups, Spanish language media partners and faith-based organizations will discuss the details of a national campaign to urge Latinos to fully participate in the 2010 Census, which is six months away. The event will be held Thursday, October 1, at 10:00 am. in the Murrow White Lisagor Room of the National Press Club. The ya es hora ¡HAGASE CONTAR! (It’s Time, Make Yourself Count!) Campaign is the largest and most comprehensive effort to inform and motivate Latinos to fully participate in the 2010 Census.
The 2000 Census, despite producing a net over-count of the total U.S. population, undercounted Latinos by about 3% (or one million people). The ya es hora ¡HAGASE CONTAR! Campaign, a historic partnership of national Spanish-language media and prominent Latino organizations, will seek to enhance the Bureau’s efforts to count Latinos through a sustained and aggressive community education initiative that seeks to mobilize hundreds of local organizations on the ground and saturate the Spanish-language airwaves with effective public service messages.
