Playwright José Rivera, the Academy Award nominated screenwriter of The Motorcycle Diaries, revisits his native Puerto Rico in an exploration of love and marriage that reverberates with passion, humor, and romance. The play examines the 38-year marriage of a couple who met and married in Peurto Rico, then pursued that elusive American dream – leading them eventually to Alabama and life of adventure, disillusion and sacrifice that forges a deeper love which grows long after the rush of romance has gone. Barksdale’s production incorporates authentic boleros choreographed and performed by The Latin Ballet.
A NOTE ABOUT THE HISPANIC THEATRE PROJECT
Barksdale Theatre has embarked on an exciting 3-year commitment – The Hispanic Theatre Project. The objectives of The Hispanic Theatre Project include increasing exposure of the great Spanish and Hispanic playwrights, providing a showcase for professional artists of Hispanic ancestry, and enabling Richmond’s growing Hispanic population to connect to theatre arts in our community. Special student matinees of Boleros for the Disenchanted are being scheduled for upper level high school Spanish, English and Drama classes. In addition, Barksdale is increasing logistical access to programming and to our facility by providing Spanish speakers in the Box Office and Spanish speaking ushers for performances of Boleros for the Disenchanted. The show itself is being presented in English with Spanish supertitles. Every effort is being made to reach out to Hispanic and Latino communities in the greater Richmond area, including contacting Hispanic media outlets and translating marketing materials into Spanish. El dramaturgo José Rivera, guionista nominado para el Oscar por el guion de ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’, regreza a su Puerto Rico natal en una exploración del amor y el matrimonio resonando con la pasión de las canciónes de amor latinas. Romance y humor colisionan cuando la joven Flora descubre que su prometido le ha estado siendo infiel. Ignorando los consejos de su madre, quien sugiere un hechizo para hacer que el prometido sea fiel, y la propuesta de su padre para matar al hombre, Flora cambia su curso y se enamorandose de otro hombre- el apuesto y respetable, Eusebio. La pareja se muda al otro lado del mundo a Alabama y comienza una travesia de 38 años, llena de aventura, desilusión, y sacrificio que forjará el amor profundo que crece mucho después que la emoción del romance se ha ido.

El Proyecto de Teatro Hispano
En colaboración con el Ballet Latino de VirginiaEl Teatro Barksdale, en colaboración con el Ballet Latino de Virginia, ha iniciado el Proyecto de Teatro Hispano, el cual será de tres años. Comenzará en el mes de Septiembre del año 2009. Los objetivos primordiales del proyecto son:
• Expandir, entre la población general, un reconocimiento a las contribuciónes magnificas que los dramaturgos, compositores, y filósofos, españoles e hispanos, han hecho a la cultura occidental.
• Facilitar a la población hispana en Richmond la oportunidad de sentirse más incluida en la vida cultural de nuestra comunidad en general.
• Proveer oportunidades para artistas profesionales, tanto locales como nacionales, de ascendencia española o hispana ser parte del proyecto.
• Crear un foro entretenido y agradable para examinar y discutir de cuestiónes pertinentes a la cultura hispana.La primera producción del Proyecto comenzará en Septiembre del año 2009 con ‘Boleros for the Disenchanted’, la cual será a la vez la primera producción en la temporada 2009-2010 del Teatro Barksdale.
