“Marga Gomez, acclaimed playwright and stand-up comedian, will perform during the Opening Plenary at the ’ 27th Annual Convention on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Gomez is a Cuban-Puerto Rican legend of stand-up comedy and will be performing her hilarious theater piece “Long Island Iced Latina” about Latinos and Latinas who don’t speak Spanish but identify with Hispanic culture.

“In ‘Long Island Iced Latina,’ Gomez pours a long tall drink of cultural confusion, chronic virginity and mother daughter instability. What begins as a hilariously dark memoir of Gomez as the only brown girl in a white high school morphs into an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can’t speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis,” writes OUTmedia in a review of Gomez’s performance.

Gomez is the recipient of a 2006 Drama Desk nomination and a 2004 GLAAD Award for Off-Off Broadway Theater. Her acting credits include “The Vagina Monologues” at the Westside Theater, HBO’s “Tracy Takes on…,” “Guiding Light,” “Batman Forever,” “Sphere” and indie favorites “Rosa Negra” and “The D Word.”

Gomez has written and performed eight solo plays, and her credits include HBO, Showtime and PBS. She has appeared at Princeton, Yale, New York University, Columbia University, and countless comedy clubs.

Gomez’s performance will take place during the Opening Plenary from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 24, 2009 in the Grand Ballroom of the Puerto Rico Convention Center. Gomez’s performance and the Opening Plenary will welcome the more than 700 people attending NAHJ’s convention, and is made possible by the generous sponsorship of FedEx.

NAHJ’s 27th Annual Convention will run from June 24 to June 27, 2009 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and will focus on intensive, cutting-edge multimedia training. Convention attendees will have access to more than 63 workshops, training sessions and panel discussions to help them compete in a changing media landscape.
