“Representative Ben Lujan sponsored House Bill 821, which establishes Más New Mexico as one of the official Spanish newspapers in the state in which state agencies may publish legal advertisements and notices. The bill was signed by Governor Bill Richardson on April 8, 2009.

Padilla Media LLC launched Más New Mexico January 2009, and one of the principals of the LLC is Clara Padilla Andrews, former New Mexico secretary of state (1982-1985). Padilla Andrews also serves as president of the National Association of Hispanic Publications and has been the publisher and owner of El Hispanic News in Portland, Oregon for 14 years.

“We are fulfilling a real need in the community for quality, bilingual news services, and it’s an honor to be recognized for our efforts,” Padilla said. “Más New Mexico reaches a part of the population that was previously over looked by traditional media.”

Adding one additional source by which to communicate with the Spanish-speaking public will help to ensure that the public is adequately informed about the action to be taken. In accordance with the legislation, state agencies will absorb the cost of publication. Courts are required to publish legal notices and advertisements relating to such cases including, but not exclusive to; legal process against nonresidents, unknown or absent parties, notices of sale of real estate under foreclosure of mortgages or executions, and trespass warnings.

New Mexico laws established the legal requirements to publish court legal notices, and if state laws require state agencies to publish legal advertisements, they must comply with this law. For the purpose of publishing these legal notices in Spanish as required by law for any agencies of the state, the law lists the recognized official Spanish Newspapers of New Mexico.
