The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI) announced Ed Avila as the recipient of this year’s Legacy Award at its annual Gala dinner in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, May 21, 2009. The award honors outstanding leadership in the civic life of the Latino community
As president of Project Restore, Mr. Avila has spurred the rebuilding and renovation of invaluable building and historic sites, including the restoration and preservation of Los Angeles City Hall. Since 2007, he has been the executive director of LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, which will open a new cultural complex at El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park. Among his numerous contributions to the City of Los Angeles, Mr. Avila has served as deputy mayor under Tom Bradley and as an administrator with the Community Redevelopment Agency. He is also widely recognized in the Latino community for his efforts as the first executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), and as president of Alliance for a Better Community (ABC).
“This award is given to an individual who embodies active participation and dedication to the advancement of the Hispanic and other communities,” said Dr. Harry Pachon, TRPI president.
