Maribel comes to America’s Voice with over two decades of experience in Spanish language media. In 1993, Maribel became the first Washington Correspondent for La Opinión, the largest Spanish language newspaper in the country. As La Opinión’s DC Correspondent, Maribel has interviewed numerous Presidents, Vice Presidents, policymakers, and other leaders. She has spent years covering the main issue of concern for the Latino community – immigration — and her coverage of the national 2006-2007 immigration debates in Congress earned her the American Immigration Lawyers Association 2007 Media Leadership Award. As one of the most respected journalists in the country, Maribel brings a new voice to the immigration reform movement. She will work closely with other immigration experts and organizations to keep the Latino community informed about progress on comprehensive immigration reform in 2009.
“Over many years as a journalist, Maribel has produced an outstanding body of work that consistently captured the immigration debate in all its dimensions, from the effects of our broken system on workers and families, to the high and low politics of the heated policy debate, to the promise and pitfalls of proposed legislation,” said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice. “We are thrilled to provide Maribel with the opportunity to continue bringing her unique voice and informed perspective to the immigration debate at this historic moment. We are confident that her reporting and commentary on immigration reform will indeed constitute ‘the first draft of history’ — one especially tailored for an audience whose lives and future literally hang in the balance.”
America’s Voice — Harnessing the power of American voices and American values to win common sense immigration reform.“
