Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Jr. to Receive Award from Miami’s Beacon Council

“The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s official economic development organization, is honoring Miami residents Gloria and , Jr., founders of Estefan Enterprises, with the Jay Malina Award for their lifetime achievements and notable contributions to the growth of the arts, entertainment and hospitality industries in Miami-Dade County. Every year, The Beacon Council celebrates the diversity and entrepreneurship of its local economy by honoring a group of leading businesses and executives who through their work play a significant role in the areas of job creation, business expansion, corporate citizenship and leadership in their respective industries. The Seventh Annual Beacon Awards will be held on Thursday, March 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami Beach, Florida.

The Jay Malina Award is named in honor of the late founder and co-chair of the One Community One Goal® project, Jay Malina. This year’s honorees, Gloria and , Jr. of Estefan Enterprises, Inc., represent the entrepreneurial spirit of the multi-cultural, multi-lingual people of Miami-Dade County. The company was founded in Miami Beach, Florida by the Estefans in 1986 and since then, they have grown their brand into a global entertainment empire spanning across numerous industries. Gloria and Emilio have over 30 businesses including music production, television and film production, music and print publishing, talent management, restaurants, hotels and real estate. As longtime Miami-Dade residents, they have also given back to the community through various charities, most recently, a $1 million gift to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. The Estefans are a vibrant business force, employing over 700 and promoting Miami-Dade worldwide.

Frank Nero, President & CEO of The Beacon Council states, “Miami-Dade is a global business destination in which the Estefans have long been a major catalyst for growth, not only in Miami, but worldwide. We are recognizing the legacy the Estefans have created in our community through their business and charitable investments, locally and internationally.”

The Beacon Council will also honor:

Florida International University (FIU) President Dr. Modesto A. Maidique: Internationally recognized as a leader in higher education, he has led FIU to become the nation’s largest Hispanic-serving university and one of the nation’s top public research universities, producing a highly skilled, knowledge-based workforce for Miami-Dade County.

Rene Ruiz Couture: Its founder and designer, Rene Ruiz, is a graduate of the Miami International University of Art & Design and has been building his couture, bridal and ready-to-wear brand across the globe from his design studio in Coral Gables, Florida. The new award is part of The Beacon Council’s Fashion & Lifestyle Initiative which seeks to raise Miami-Dade County’s profile as a Fashion & Lifestyle Industry hub.

The City of Miami and Mayor Manny Diaz: The City of Miami has begun laying the “green” groundwork for protecting our community’s environment, at the same time ensuring that the urban areas are more livable and sustainable for the future growth and economic health of Miami-Dade County.

Experience Aviation Inc.: Its founder, Barrington Irving, is the youngest solo and first black pilot to fly around the globe. He created the school in Opa-locka, Florida to address the shortage of youth pursuing careers in the fields of aviation and aerospace.

David Lawrence Jr.: Retired Miami Herald publisher and philanthropist who upon retirement, took up the cause of improving pre-K quality education and other initiatives that affect early childhood development in Miami-Dade. He is president of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation and a national board member of the Foundation for Child Development.
