In the event U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) vacates her position next year, Alma Aguado is ready to lead Texas into the future with a focus on education.
“The Hispanic community is a few decades away from an historical turning point. If we plan well and redirect the curve of high school dropouts and teen pregnancy, the Hispanic labor force will produce an impact on the economy of Texas, our country and the world,” Aguado recently told Hispanic medical professionals.
Dr. Alma Aguado, 46, a Texas physician planning to enter the U.S. Senate race in 2010, is making a name for herself as the doctor who wants to make a difference. A Democrat practicing internal medicine in San Antonio, Aguado is focused on healthcare reform because she wants to foster a healthcare system that aids, not disables, Americans.
Involved in healthcare for 23 years, Aguado understands the current system’s shortfalls and wants to improve it. Twenty-seven percent of Medicare’s annual $327 billion budget in 2007 went to care for patients in their final year of life. The baby boomer generation is the largest it has ever been and Aguado wants to help the elderly be empowered by educating them about their rights and responsibilities as patients. She proposes video education about the Advance Directives Act (1999), also known as the Texas Futile Care Law, and wants to provide people over 60 with information about living wills, durable powers of attorney and Do Not Resuscitate orders.
Other issues on Aguado’s agenda are:
* Teen pregnancy – teach contraceptive use and sex education beginning in kindergarten in an effort to decrease the $7 billion annual expense for healthcare, foster care, criminal justice and public assistance costs.
* Stem Cells – promote regenerative medicine to prolong baby boomers’ productivity to a retirement age of 75.
* Dropouts – screen high school students for bipolar disorder.
* Disease treatment – utilize CO2 sequestration technology to remedy lung disease and upper respiratory disease.
* Vehicular accident prevention – provide safe roads in highway work zones to decrease fatalities in construction areas.More information: www.businesswire.com/news/home/20090209005082/en
