A A AlvarezYoung Venezuelan author A. A. Alvarez makes the headlines with a fun novel where wit and reality demonstrate that money is not the only reason young Latin Americans immigrate to the USA. With his book, Chronicles of a Nomad: Memoirs of an Immigrant, the young writer gives readers an insider’s perspective about the way plenty of today’s young immigrants are brought up, and why even those who are raised in comfort may also feel the need to pursue their dreams abroad.

Chronicles of a Nomad: Memoirs of an Immigrant is a first-person adventure narrated by Carlos Rodriguez, an intrepid young immigrant who embarked in a journey of self-discovery and reflection by confiding his secrets to the reader. Although he spends his childhood in abundance, at age fifteen, the worsening state of his troubled nation leads him to Denver, Colorado, where he ends up overstaying the time allowed on his tourist visa. Not many years later, he is left with no choice but to immigrate to Greece, where the ghosts of his past challenge his future and where his search for home leads him farther away from his hometown, Caracas, Venezuela.

The eventful story takes the reader on an exciting roller-coaster ride through three very different countries and a multitude of obstacles that are often serious and humorous at the same time. The author’s easy-going style can be enjoyed by readers of all origins and political affiliations, and his chapters include topics on family, education, culture, religion, economy, politics, love, and of course, immigration.

book coverA. A. Alvarez, comments: “The expansion of technology and the globalization of the English language have contributed immensely in making immigration a part of our daily lives, be it because our neighbors came from abroad or because we are foreigners ourselves. By exchanging experiences with immigrants from all walks of life, I have learned precious lessons about growing beyond our nationalities, beyond our languages, and beyond our deepest prejudices. In Carlos Rodriguez’s story, I have merged all of our lives into one, and even though his journey is one of adaptation, his message is about those moments of clarity when we make the decisions that shape who we become. With my work, I hope to shed some light on the shadow cast by the nations that divide us, because with or without borders, we are all citizens of the world.”

While this novel is a work of fiction, it is inspired on the author’s own experience and on the stories of the many immigrants he has met throughout his journey. It is a worthy read for those wishing to embark on a truly immersive adventure full of satire, honesty, and growth.

Chronicles of a Nomad: Memoirs of an Immigrant is available worldwide through major online retailers such as Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and many more. It can also be ordered through all major bookstores using ISBN 978-960-930918-9.
