“Center Named in Memory of Leading Health Advocate Congressman Mickey Leland
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today announced the appointment of Jane L. Delgado, Ph.D., M.S. to the Board of Directors of the Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center (NUATRC), the Congressionally mandated non-profit public/private research organization. She becomes the first Hispanic and first Latina to be appointed to this prestigious board. Dr. Delgado is the President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the nation’s leading science and community-based Hispanic health advocacy and service organization.
“I am honored by Senator Reid’s appointment and look forward to joining the respected and accomplished Mickey Leland National Urban Air Toxics Research Center,” said Dr. Delgado. “The Leland Center has helped uncover human health effects caused by exposure to air toxics and has moved the nation forward in securing the promise of clean and healthy air to breathe. I am particularly honored by this appointment because the Center helps fulfill Congressman Mickey Leland’s legacy as a champion for the rights of all people to clean air and good health. It was my great blessing to have worked with Congressman Leland before his untimely death and I look forward to supporting the work of the Leland Center in fulfilling his vision of a better world.”
Dr. Delgado previously served on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Air Act Advisory Committee and made environmental health a program focus of the Alliance in the 1980s. Among other programs she founded the Alliance’s Health and Environment Action Network (HEAN), a remarkable national effort connecting communities with cutting-edge mobile air and water monitoring technology. Dr. Delgado is the author of the award-winning book AiSALUD! A Latina’s Guide to Total Health and most recently was named a 2008 Health Hero by WebMD Magazine recognizing her leadership in environmental health. “
