The Republican National Hispanic Assembly takes great pleasure in congratulating the Honorable Luis Fortuño on his impressive victory in the gubernatorial race in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. A long-time friend of the RNHA and founding member of its National Advisory Board, Luis won 52.7% of the vote, garnering nearly a million votes. He outperformed his nearest competitor by over 11 percentage points (more than 200,000 votes) allowing him to claim substantial support among the Puerto Rican electorate when he takes office as Puerto Rico’s next chief executive. His running-mate Pedro Pierluisi also won the Resident Commissioner race, becoming the island’s next representative in Congress.
Fortuño is currently Puerto Rico’s delegate to the U.S. Congress and was the first Republican to hold this post. During his time in the Congress, Luis was a very effective legislator, moving forward several important pieces of legislation including a major co-sponsor of the Puerto Rico Democracy Act, to establish a self-determination process leading to political status change for Puerto Rico. Luis is also the Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Conference, made up of Republican members of Congress of Hispanic or Portuguese descent. Fortuño beat incumbent Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, who faces a 24-count federal indictment on campaign finance offenses.
RNHA National Chairman Danny Vargas said, “We are so very proud of Luis’ accomplishments and know he will be a phenomenal leader, taking Puerto Rico to unprecedented prosperity and success. He has always be a friend and a role model to millions of Hispanics and Republicans and bring great credit to all Puerto Ricans””
