Remarks on Presidential Election 2008

On behalf of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly we wish to extent our congratulations to Senator Obama and his family on his historic victory last night. During his victory speech, he spoke of reconciliation and unification as a people and we hope that concept will guide his words and deeds moving forward. On January 20, 2009 Senator Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President and there will be another peaceful transition of power in our country as has happened throughout our proud history. He will be our new President who will serve as leader for the entire nation. Our members across the country are solid, patriotic Americans and we stand ready to support our new Commander-in-Chief. We will assist him when we agree with him; attempt to persuade him when we disagree with him and he is open to dialogue; and we will oppose him respectfully and productively when he is wrong. We will hold true to our values and our principles as we work to ensure our freedoms are protected, our homeland is secure and our future is prosperous.
We also express our gratitude and congratulations to a true American hero and leader, Senator John McCain and his running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin on running a hard-fought campaign. They battled huge obstacles and held strong until the final hours. Senator McCain will always have our unending friendship and admiration and we salute his lifetime of selfless sacrifice and service to our country. His stellar example of “Country First” inspires us all to work for causes greater than ourselves. His concession speech was gracious and magnanimous and showed the kind of class that embodies the best of American politics.
To RNHA members nationwide and Republicans in general, I say thank you for all your hard work and efforts. Your many sacrifices made a difference and are greatly appreciated. I also urge you to not be disheartened. We have a vital role to play in strengthening our Party, in honing our message, and in defending our core principles and beliefs. We must re-double our efforts to capture the imagination of the American people at the grassroots level and speak about the fundamental, basic values we believe in as Republicans—personal liberties and freedoms, individual responsibility, human rights and civil rights, a secure and peaceful homeland, a strong and prosperous future with free market principles, a respect for the family as the foundational element of our society. These are values worth fighting for and irrespective of which Party controls the White House or the Congress, we must work to ensure these values are the cornerstones of any policies they propose.
Let us remember that we have the amazing good fortune to live in the greatest nation this world has ever known. We are Americans and with that title comes much opportunity as well as much responsibility. We will remain the world’s beacon of hope, of liberty and of democratic ideals. This unites us as a people and will always serve us well. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.
