“Today the NO on Prop 8 campaign launched a powerful new Spanish language television ad featuring , and , three prominent actors currently starring in the hit television show “Ugly Betty.” The NO on Prop 8 spot will begin airing Monday, Oct. 27, on Spanish language television stations throughout California.
“Voting no on Prop 8 is not just about gay rights,” said . “It’s about preserving the integrity of equal rights in this country. This is not about being gay or straight, it’s about being American. Vote no on Prop 8.”
“Family is very important to Latinos,” said . “Prop 8 discriminates against families and everything we stand for. I encourage all Californians to vote NO on this divisive and unfair proposition.”
“Like all Americans, Latinos have family members and friends who are gay and deserve the same rights all of us have,” said . “Prop 8 would take away those rights and that’s why we urge all Californians to vote NO.”
“We are thrilled that these prominent actors are speaking directly to the Latino community,” said Yvette Martinez, the political director of No on 8. “Proponents have targeted the Latino community with advertisements that continue to lie about Prop 8. We’re so proud and so grateful to have America, Tony and Ana stand against discrimination and for fairness and equality.”
Nearly every major paper in California has editorialized against Prop 8 stating that “It is not acceptable to impose these beliefs to all society and, much less, amend the California Constitution. We are against Proposition 8.” (La Opinion), “it is only fair that it afford equal protection to all who choose to make loving lifelong commitments to one another. We recommend a “no” vote on Prop. 8.” (Orange County Register) and “Fundamental rights are exactly that. They should neither wait for popular acceptance, nor be revoked because it is lacking.” (Los Angeles Times).
