“A national organization that advocates for policies to ensure the highest quality education and other needed services for migrant children has elected the executive director of the Governor Rendell’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs to be its chair-elect for 2009 and its chairman for 2010.

Norman Bristol Colon was tabbed by the Inter-state Migrant Education Council (IMEC) during its fall meeting in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

“Advocating on behalf of migrant students before all levels of government, as well as the public and private sectors, is something I do with the utmost commitment and with a great sense of social and professional responsibility,” said Bristol Colon. “The sons and daughters of migrant and seasonal farm workers deserve an equal chance to live their own American dreams, receive a quality education, and prosper in the land that their parents harvest to help feed our great nation.”

Bristol Colon will work with the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of Student Services and Migrant Education in providing IMEC with Pennsylvania’s leadership on issues impacting migrant students and families.

“I know that migrant students have a great champion in Norman. His leadership at GACLA and his many years of experience in migrant education are a great asset to our program and this national organization,” said Carmen Medina, chief, division of student services and migrant education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs, or GACLA, is the commonwealth’s governmental agency responsible for addressing issues impacting Pennsylvania’s Latino population before the executive and legislative branches of government. Since its inception in 1971, GACLA’s mission has been to ensure that the Latino community is afforded the opportunity to continue to prosper in Pennsylvania.
