Coors Light Lideres and Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Recognize Ten Local Hispanic Leaders

Coors Light Líderes has partnered with the Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to recognize emerging leaders in the Hispanic community. Ten individuals, selected for their leadership and their desire to make a difference in their communities, will participate in the Hispanic Business Education and Training, Inc., (HBET) Latino Leadership Symposium and were recognized on-field before the game at the Oakland Raiders Fiesta Latina at McAfee Coliseum, Sunday, September 28, 2008.

The leaders recognized include: Jose Avitia, Josias Aguiar, Hon. Abel Guillen, Hector Javier Preciado, Mark Salinas, Elisa Marquez, Marty Zielke, Bernadette Zermeño, Elsa Saenz, and Liz Morales-Contreras.

According to Joedis Avila, multicultural relations manager for MillerCoors, the ten Líderes HBET Symposium participants will receive leadership training that focuses on individual talents, challenges and core values; and how they can maximize their civic participation through action and leadership. “These leaders are from all walks of life, but they all have one thing in common: a legacy of community involvement that blends seamlessly into their professions and daily activities,” Avila said.

“As a mentor and role model to youth in our surrounding area, I believe it is important to acquire as much skill and knowledge to further develop my role as a leader,” said Jose Avitia, one of the individuals selected. “I believe that attending this Symposium will further help me in assisting the Latino community.”

Josias Aguiar, another selected leader explained: “I believe that it is important to give back to [the] community because it nourishes our families and youth.”

The symposium is a one-day workshop led by renowned Hispanic leadership instructor/consultant, Juan Lopez of Amistad and Associates. During the workshop, these Latino leaders will complete a certified leadership self-evaluation assessment and participate in roundtable discussions of personal challenges, insights on power, responsibility and accountability.

Avila said that the Symposium will provide participants with an opportunity to interact with prominent business leaders and sponsors of their training, as well as acknowledge their participation and completion of the program. He said they also will identify actions or ideas to put their leadership into motion in their workplace, business or in the community. “Mainly, we hope to provide the inspiration and the incentive to continue growing in their roles as leaders in the community and to make a difference,” Avila said.

“I would like to thank MillerCoors and the Coors Light team for their generous contribution towards the Hispanic Business Education and Training, Inc., Community Leadership Training Symposium,” said Ron Silva, President of HBET. “The Líderes Program and the HBET Symposium will help create greater access for emerging Latino community leaders to serve on policy-making tables and represent Latino businesses and community interests in Alameda County.”

The Coors Light Líderes Program started in 2006 to provide leadership development and training to Latino and Latina business and community leaders throughout the United States. So far, more than 500 leaders have received the Líderes training. The Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce recognized the need to provide training and development for talented Latino business professionals to recognize within themselves and others what leadership is and how to make a difference in their communities.
